It's been a secret until now. After 2 years of development, our 69 Shelby Continuation is nearly complete. I'm in charge of Marketing and I have decided to gather the input of enthusiast (like myself and ya'll) for input on some finishing touches. I hope I'm not making a mistake here so this may be the first and last post on this project until the official release that will be in most of the popular publications. The first area is the rear of the car. I'll provide some details at this point. The Chrome Bumper has been replaced with an integrated bumper that matches the exterior color of the car(s). The reverse lights have been replaces with Roush Mini Driving Lights. The trunk contains the fuel cell so the gas cap has been eliminated. So here goes. How would you paint the back? Think about the 69 Shelby's and also think about the technology we have today and the means of adding affects. I'll stop here so I don't provide too much influence. We are serious about this project and I'll provide more details based upon the feedback of this first post. Thanks for reading this.
I would like to see what it might look like the way it is but with stripes over the top not down the sides ????????? try it with the standard two or maybe three like the super snake it may lay out better with the hood scoops and the rear exaust ???????? Dominic
Awesome backend. When do we see the rest? What kind of powertrain? Is this one of a kind, or are these going to be made in mass? Target price? Tell us more. As to your actual question, it definitely needs some variation on the back. I think it depends on what your are actually creating. Is this a driver, or a show piece? Are you going to be creating a brand and an image, or is this a one shot replica attempt?
dc-dd, Are you referring to the Shelby 08 Super Snake or the Unique Performance 67 Super Snake? Either one, I like them both. The potential issue would be the hood design on the 69 Shelby's. I appreciate your feedback and will have my art department perform the design. Thanks for your input
Would not want/like Lemans stripes (think they look funny on anything after 66) Way over done IMHO Lots of red on the back of the car.. Would think it might be broken up with something like carbon fiber in the insert at the top (the traditional Shelby screen area) and the taillight area. In this way you might minimize the large size of the intergrated rear bumper
It is missing something...i think painting the rear tail pan a different color like black or silver would break up the rear. I dont know if i would have gotten rid of the chrome bumper. Much like painting the rear pan it breaks it up and prevents it from looking like an import....and what is wrong with chrome these days?
Sorry, looks very tacky, like a low budget VW kit. Why is the exhaust in the middle of the bumper rather than underneath it? Back up lights look too small in context. Also makes the tail lights look timid. Maybe it's the angle, but the bumper area looks undefined. Like a bad pressing in plastic. Stripes may help, but remember there are no rear stripes on a '69. There was no gas cap back there either, it was hidden behind the license tag. Will the tag go in the center as before? That would definitely help fill in that void.
Perhaps we need a few different angles of the rear to help judge it, not a straight on shot. But I would say, break it up a bit. Paint the entire taillight panel black, to give some contrast and make the taillights look like they should be there. Good luck!
I think a chrome bumper would help. They just looked right. That look you have now will age ,maybe already has. Now with what you have I might put a argent tail light panel in there like 68's had and have black in the trunk lid recess. That should break it up some. One thing I always thought was the factory trunk lid recessed area would have looked better directly above the taillight panel with the solid color area of the spoiler above it, maybe sweeping at an angle on the back side like a firebird/tran am spoiler.
Thank you for the input thus far. It has been very helpful. We are performing a video documentary and perhaps one day, it will be published. We value all comments which makes our meeting very interesting. Let me clarify a few question (or comments). The exhaust is in the original area. It may appear to be higher because we extended the valance around the entire car. The License plate will go in the original position as well, centered in the middle of the two tail lights. The gas cap has been eliminated because the fuel cell is located in the trunk (which also has been customized) more pictures to follow and questions to ask in the near future. We agree that the rear end yells RED. Our concept drawings depict a finished product aside from the Mono Red. It is my intent to seek input from the Shelby community to provide perhaps "better" ideas than what we cooked up. With the input provided thus far, we are keeping our graphics department very busy. 65GTFastback. Please expand on your last sentence. We would like clarification. Some of us are thinking one thing while others are thinking another. The argent paint or perhaps the PPG 32930 used on the GT/CS (California Special) front grill is similar to argent but yet a bit darker. In any event, the graphics department will run them all including black and carbon fiber. Thank you all again for your input.
That recessed area that said Shelby and had a black mesh would look good lowered about 1.5" to where its right above the tail lights. Then instead of a flat vertical surface above it, make it sweep from the black mesh up to the spoiler top at a rake angle... that may be clear as mud. I was thinking of the color of 68 Shelbys taillight panel. Its some type of silver and maybe brighter than argent. Whatever it is, it looks good on red cars.
I think the Tail Light Panel should be either Black or Silver BUT done with a Camera Case effect. Also, why does the Recessed area of the Drivers Side Quarter Extension look like it is Drooping? Do you work for Shelby Automobiles? David.
I enjoy driving my cars for many reasons. Aside from the reminiscing of my wonder years, I so dig the Wow factor. The heads my car turns is cool and I like to talk to people and hear their mustang stories and watching them reminisce. Not one story told without smiles. The down side of my classic Mustangs. Fear. Fear of damage. Nicks, scratches, chips. You know what I’m talking about. Of all the models of early Mustangs, 1969 is my favorite. I particularly favor the Big Block Mach 1’s and both model Shelby’s (Sport roof and Convertible). I consider myself a purist. I feel these cars are beautiful in their current form. I remember cursing under my breath those early adapters who modified these models way before the days of the new vocabulary, “Extension, Restomod or even Continuation”. I think it was because the “Early” adapters didn’t have the funds to restore with original parts. As many of your well knows, restoring these cars is down right expensive. When I run the numbers on how much it would cost to do a restomod “Right” today, it would cost over $300,000.00. This market can support this business too. I have to say that I dream of a 69 restomod. But it has to be done right. I would like a car that doesn’t float while driving. I would like a car with better suspension and some of the modern conveniences like power windows and door locks. No way would I take a Shelby, Mach 1 Q or R code and mess with it, but yes, make a 69 like an Eleanor but better. The plus side about Unique Performance is they proved there is a market for Shelby Continuations. And they proved that the purchaser made a good investment. Those Eleanor’s are worth at least double today. I never saw it coming… The back looks hot. The suggestions I have read so far are pretty good. I can’t add anything other than I would like to see more pictures, angles and information.
