I have a lead in a set of four original 65 steel wheels off of an early serial number car, but I have no idea what they are worth. Anyone care to enlighten me? I looked at ehay, but didn't see any listed or past results.

    thx

It is very rare to see these for sale.....they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay because they are so rare. Correct ones can go for alot of money.

1965 and 66 carryover steel wheels are not only rare, but valuable, so if you can get them at a good price, I would do it. I have the original steel wheels for my car and I would not part with them for any amount. I also have original Shelby Cragers, and I value my steel wheels as much as my Cragers, since the car came with steel wheels. One thing I have found is that there are many styles of steel wheels available. I believe the earliest GT 350's came with 5 1/2" X 15" wheels, not the 6" X 15". The centers on 5 1/2" wheels are very different than the 6" wheels and are easily distinguished. Also, on the later 6" wheels, the centers have slight differences, especially around the hub, but all wheels have the date of manufacture stamped on them, so you can determine if they would work on your car. One thing I can tell you, the original wheels are the heaviest steel wheels you will ever lift.....very strong!!! Good Luck on your quest, Russ

My GT350H came with Hertz magnums so I'm not looking to purchase these for my car. I just have an opportunity to buy a set and was looking for a ballpark figure of what they are worth. He is asking $450 for the set of four. Is this a good price assuming the are KH 15" x 5.5" with the proper date code for a very early 65 car?

    thx

The 15 by 5.5" is pretty hard to come by. They came on the early cars, then the 6" wide units were introduced.
Common applications were High Performance, special service (Police, etc.) and some Galaxies / wagons.
It would appear that a lot of them were just put in the trash.

    # 17 is a steel wheel stripe car.

I think $450 is a very good price, if they are originals. Russ

my '66 also came with the painted Magnum 500's. Sadly I only have the spare. But, in my opinion, they are not very good looking compared with the chrome Magnum 500's.

No those have centers that are stamped differently (typical truck wheels)

Believe they are different. Even the T-Bird used similar wheels but the Shelby wheels have circular cut in the center "solid" section (not stamped/bent)

Been chasing this detail for a restoration. SO have been looking at every close up of the wheels shown in original pictures. The detail is slight and not something anyone carried to take a really nice picture of 40 years ago :( But you can still make it out.

"The 15 by 5.5" is pretty hard to come by. They came on the early cars, then the 6" wide units were introduced"

This, if true, is a salient distinction.

Is there any paper trail whatsoever that it is factual? I have seen many 15x6 steel wheel 1965 GT-350s, inclusive, and only upon joining this board recently have I seen *without attribition* that certain 1965 GT-350s were equipped with 15x5.5 steel wheels. Perhaps, if true, someone can step forth and transition this from speculation to verifiable fact.

    Hi,
Mark Hovander, 5S284, specifies on his web page that
the wheels were changed from 15x5.5" to 15x6.0"
when cars with the Ford serial number 217xxx series were
    delivered to Shelby.
My car 5S275 is in the 217xxx series and it was received at Shelby
    on May 13th 1965.

    Z.Ray,
4 grey painted magnums for a 66 Shelby were sold
on ebay for $355 this morning. Ebay # 250196584169. I had plans to see where they were going and bid on them but fell asleep.
    Auction ended by 1.00am CST.
Good catch for the new owner, don't you think?

    Yes, that was a deal.

I have to admit, I've slept thru the ending of a few auctions that I'd had interest in.

I've had several private messages related to these wheels. Given some of the offers already made sight unseen, it appears $450 is a very reasonable price. I have contacted the seller and let him know that if they are indeed KH 15x15.5, I want them. I'll post again when confirmed and they are in my possesion. I will also respond to the pm's I've already received.

    thx

    Hi Russ,
You need to report this to Mark Hovander and Howard Pardee
as it means the text about the steel wheels should be changed
from 217xxx to 201xxx. Most likely it's like this:
Cars # 001-113 were delivered from Ford in Dec of 64 and the next batch of
cars 114-XXX were delivered in March of 65. Probably the Dec cars had the
5.5" steel wheels and March cars had the 6.0".
