The First Production GT 500 At The Shelby American Collection Christmas Party

    Hello Everyone,

My wife and I along with our friends Mike and Pam Cox attended the Shelby American Collection Christmas Party last night. As usual it was a great event. Steve Volk, Tom Benjamin, Bill and Dave Murray, and all of the rest of the people associated with the collection put on a wonderful event each year. If you have not been there; you really should try to attend someday..... you will not be disappointed. We wish to thank them all for welcoming our car into the collection for a few months.

Last night was very special for us because our car was on display. We heard nothing but good things about the car from everyone that spoke with us and most all of them were so glad to know that we still drive the car.

I know that Carroll Shelby has been involved in some controversial things over the years. Please do not ruin this thread with any comments about the current controversy.

Carroll Shelby made last night's party a very memorable event for us. As he was signing my copy of "Remembering The Shelby Years" I told him that my wife and I own the very first production GT 500 and that it was on display in the building. I asked him if he thought he might be able to make it over to the car for some pictures before the night was over. He very graciously answered, "Yes". Thank you Steve Volk, Amy Boylan, and Kerry White for your assistance.

After the special guests had made their speeches and some auction action took place; Steve Volk and Carroll Shelby walked over to the car. Carroll talked with me about the car, signed a dash piece for me, and posed for pictures. It was an experience that I am very thankful for and will never forget. The party went better than we had ever dreamed.

    THANK YOU CARROLL SHELBY!!!!!!!

I was also able to speak with Chuck Cantwell, Lew Spencer, and Phil Remington about the car and their years at Shelby American. I wish to thank them also for spending a few minutes of their time with me.

Everything fell into place for us last night. The party turned into a "once in a lifetime" experience for us and we will never forget it.

We have attached some photos and we hope that you enjoy them.

    Thanks everyone.

    Best regards,
    Eric and Carrie Johnson

    Hey Eric

Thanks for sharing the stories along with the pictures. There is a lot of history attached to these cars, and this event has just added to the legendary status your car already posessed. What makes the story just a little "cooler" for me is that you're a true enthusiest who enjoys the hobby and actually drives your car. What an awesome experience it must have been!

    Congrats....Mark

    Mark,

Thanks, it was truly an awesome evening for us. I am still on cloud-9.

    Randall,

Your grandfather really impressed me last night. Carroll was able to push aside all of the current turmoil and his many health problems and give me a few minutes of his valuable time. Carroll Shelby, an automotive icon, spending a few minutes with a simple long time enthusiast and fan of his cars. It was truly an event in my lifetime that I will never forget and will always remember fondly. I could not thank him enough for providing me with something that not everyone gets a chance to have. I consider myself truly fortunate.

    Best regards,
    Eric

It was great to see Eric and his great looking car last night at the SAC fundraiser. It is the most recent example of many historically significant cars that the museum has been fortunate to display over the past eleven years. I know that Eric and Carrie are immensely thilled with CS spending time with them at the party. Congratulations. Joe.

    Eric,

Glad to had a great night. In addition to meeting Carroll, I'm glad you got to hook up with Chuck. He's another super guy and a real gentleman. He too always has great stories to tell. I hope seeing your car triggered some memories. I have his signature alongside Carroll's in my owner's manual. All I need is Pete Brok's and it will be complete!

    Roy,

Thanks for the compliments. We did have a great night. Getting a few minutes of Carroll's time was awesome.

It was also special to get to meet and speak with Chuck Cantwell, Lew Spencer, and Phil Remington. They all were appreciative that the car was there and that we do drive it. Each of them shared some memories of their years with Shelby with me. It was such a special experience to have had.

    Thanks again.

    Best regards,
    Eric

I attended last year's party and it was a great time.
Steve Volk is a super guy and this is a rare opportunity to shake hands and speak with some folks who wrote automotive history.

What a great story and wonderful pictures. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I agree that this thread is a great way to focus on the reasons we all love these cars. Thank you also for including the note specifically asking folks to NOT ruin the thread.

My son and I had the chance to tour the collection a year or so ago. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to share my enthusiasm with him.

Thanks again for sharing and for redirecting the focus back to the positive.

    Eric,

Congratulations on your meeting with Carroll Shelby. I know it will be a treasured memory for years to come. And kudos for getting your car displayed there.

I was at a Shelby meet in Texas many years ago; back in the late 70’s or early 80’s. No one knew if Carroll was going to be there or not, so when I passed him in the hallway at the hotel I nearly fell over. I stammered up to him and asked for his autograph. He graciously consented and the only thing I could find to be signed was my event name tag. I will treasure that tag forever. He took his time and made me feel like the only one in the world that mattered to him for those few minutes.

The next day he walked around at the car show area talking to owners and posing for pictures with them in front of their cars. I will never forget how gracious he was and how he made everyone feel like a long lost friend. What a guy!

    Steve

Looks like the whole Shelby factory was there...
The Shelby Collection, seems to have a great combination of cars...I see them at Daytona, for the historic races, seem to be a great group!!
