Here is a link to the otis chandler 1971 hemi cuda convertible that just failed to sell on ebay for 2.7 million dollars. Although that may seem like a good price, this is billed to be one of the best muscle cars in the world by some and certainly one of if not the best of the 11 hemi cuda convertibles in 71. It is certainly not looking good for scottsdale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WORL...oryZ6409QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Best Regards, Vern
That is just one particular car, plus nobody is going to pay big money for any car this close to Barrett-Jackson '08. The real players for cars like this are waiting for Scottsdale.
I used to work at a Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge pre-delivery service place . I was there from June of 1970 to January of 1975. Ah, sorry, 'cuda's and Challengers just plain were not put together that well.
I agree. Open and shut a door on a Chrysler ,Plymouth or Dodge and do the same on the same year Ford and the Chrysler ,Plymouth or Dodge sounds like a tin can. I do think the 71 Cuda design is almost as great looking as the 69/70 Shelby.
A bit of a difference from how you phrased it, though... It failed to sell because it did not meet reserve. 5 people bid MORE than 2.7 million (which, I gotta tell ya, is insane. ), but the asking price was apparently higher. ...and I agree with Bob and roddster... I had a 70 Cuda convertible...and it was a chintzy, cheaply-made little car.
I'm certainly not trying to say it was a great car....they were put together terribly. I'm just saying that a in the last two years....this car would have brought a lot more money. One thing is for sure.....if I had to live with the a car for the rest of my life...I'd take almost any Shelby over a hemi cuda/challenger convertible any day. Best Regards, Vern
Oh trust me.....im feeling that there is a big market for interesting cars this year..... Cars that stick out will still command top dollar. I dont think any other original shelby race team trucks will be parked next to yours come auction day! Best Regards, Vern
It seems to me that Barrett-Jackson would be the place to sell a vintage Shelby truck like that. If I may ask, why didn’t you approach them about selling this or did they reject it? That truck is so awesome and if it is authentic it seems that they would just jump all over it. Especially since Carroll is always there, it seems like this would be the perfect place to sell it.
I dont know..... One bad memory last year was when i was sitting in my room watching the 'Von Dutch Bus" sell for like 40K. The bus was von dutch's personal home and workshop and was completely original as dutch lived in it. It even had pinstiping on things like the refrigerator and engraved tools and knives laying around the inside. The price was absolute shocker....even to someone who isnt into von dutch very much. Maybe this stuff gets misunderstood at BJ. Then again....the 4 Million dollar futureliner bus was not misunderstood by a long shot! Best Regards, Vern
Speaking of Barrett-Jackson,I got my program for the auction listing all the cars going on the block. There must be around 50 clones listed(maybe more)of '66and '67 Shelbys, Hemi'Cudas, and Hemi challengers. More than I've seen the last 2 years at B-J. It'll be interesting to see what kind of money these cars fetch. I would be hesitant to put '67 GT-500 on the block right now without a reserve. I just don't think there will be big spenders out there like there was 2 years ago. But I guess one never knows. Some of these bidders have more money than brains. 2.7 mil. for a hemi 'cuda not enough ? WOW !! I wonder what the reserve was on this museum piece ?
NO !! I don't think the owner of this car has either. Maybe he put a reserve of 3.5 mil. and figured "If I get it ,great ! If I don't , who cares ".
Your right about that....or maybe it is only truly worth what the second highest bidder is willing to pay. I saw a 70 hemi convertible go for over 2.1 two years ago at Barrett....and it didn't look well done and the 71 is worth substantially more than the 70. Also, at an auction in September of 05 an owner didn't sell for a bid of 4.1 million. http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/20/autos/scottsdale_saturday_roundup/index.htm?section=money_latest I saw the purple car in that article last year in Scottsdale and it is the car that is in the background of one of the auction photos to the right of a truck. It was largely original but i was told that the winning bidder added after market wheels and billboard stripes...it seems that has been confirmed. Also, i believe that the car that was bid to 4.1 is the white convertible in the background of the auction photos. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/archive/index.php/t-123859.html Also, the red car in the photos is a car which i remember being kept in the Volo Museum.....there asking price for that car, a 70 model, was higher than 2.7 if i remember correctly. As the auction states....this guy has a lot of hemi convertibles! BEst Regards, Vern
We are donating a predetermined percent of the truck sale to the Carroll Shelby Childrens Foundation. BJ wanted 10% from the buyer and the seller. RM offered us a much, much better deal. We are working on trying to get Carroll Shelby to the RM Auction on the 18th. We are lot #153. CSX2011 will go accross the blocks just before us. Both vehicles will be displayed together. Plus, we missed BJ's cut-off date. We are in the process of cleaning the truck up and preparing it for the auction. You wouldn't believe how nice some of the original paint shines!!! This really is a nice truck!
"I saw a 70 hemi convertible go for over 2.1 two years ago at barrett....and it didnt look well done and the 71 is worth substantially more than the 70." I drove that 2.1 Cuda across the block for my friend that also used to own the yellow 71. The guy that bought it also bought the yellow car that he is now selling. I just don't know of one that has sold for more than 2.1 but your your Uh OH comment indicates to me that you think prices are off because the yellow car only bids to 2.7. I think prices are off but a 2.7 bid would indicate to me that prices are up instead.
As for the hemi cudas....i really dont know much about them at all. I just know that from everything i have been reading in the past two years....the 71 (especially this one) is supposed to be worth alot more than 2.7. Maybe im wrong....wouldnt be a rare occurence. BEst REgards, Vern
Why would anyone pay the big bucks know on ebay when they can wait a couple of weeks pay $1200 bucks have a few cocktails on stage , get on TV ,get a hug from Amy and pay 10% buyers fee and drop a few mil, I know I would be waiting!!!
I thought that Bill W who owns the 1971 sold his 1971 Blue one for 3M a while back as stated in Hemmings Muscle machines. My friend bought a 1971 HEMI challenger in '02 from the original owner with 30K and it was all original sans headers, Keystone mags and a 411 gear replacing the 354. 4 speed shaker dana plum crazy car. I can attest to the lousy body work and paint on mopars from that car. Factory out dings in places that could only been done before paint. One corner edge of the deck lid at the rear window was ragged and never hemmed properly. The doors had that distinctive cheap sound that mopars had back them as I remember from a couple of E-bodies that I had owned. By the way, did anyone notice the white 1968 Shelby in the storage facility with all those cuda converts in one of the ebay pictures? Gary
