Hi, The wheel on my 67 GT500 has an issue. One of the two wires to the horn button is no longer connected to the stainless steel ring on the back. Anyone ever try to repair this problem first hand?
Seems to be a common problem with these wheels, any chance of publishing a detailed repair or maybe recording an audio file and posting that? Thanks.
I got off fairly easy on this one. Bob and Dave were kind enough to give me the info on the job. I drilled in through the rear of the hub between the two contact rings at about 12 o'clock. I drilled two holes side by side and then ran them together. Luckily my bad wire was right there where it had come loose from the ring. How it came loose while packed in that epoxy is a mystery. There were no burns. The remainder of the wire was still held tightly in the epoxy. I was prepared to drill through and replace both wires. I decided to take the short way out and reattached the wire to the ring and it made good contact. I checked it with an ohm meter. I tugged on both wires from the front and they were still held tightly by the epoxy. I then filled the hole back in with some epoxy putty. It is working fine now. It is a very tight area to work in. I was ready for the big job with camera ready. I can post some pictures of as far as I got, but you can't see much down in the hole. Thanks again to Bob Gaines and David Randal for the advice.
My 67 horn gave up many years ago and I solved it with a separate relay. Do you guys think that this problem solver may make my relay obsolete. Texas Swede
Thanks Bob, Could you send me the solution as well? Also, do I need to remove the steering wheel to apply the fix? /Bo Sewallius alias Texas Swede
I had a machinist drill the rings from the back with about 3/16" holes and turn a couple of contacts to press fit into the rings. We soldered new wires to the contacts, fed the wires up thru the original location, and pressed the contacts flush. It has worked great for many years!
