OK this is my first real post here. maybe y'all can shed some light. My San Jose 289 HIPO 2+2 mustang has engine assly. date of Oct 27 65 and a scheduled build date of June 7th 66, thats 8 months that the motor was sitting on a shelf! The vin # is stamped on the block and matchs the aprons vin # ect. I purchaced the car from the original owner back in 1973 with over 90,000 mi on it. Most if not all sheet metal, glass, hinges ect are dated around march- aprill 66. I know from on of my saac regestry that alote of 1966 GT 350H cars were built at SHELBY American around the same time as my non shelby car, (maybe the GT350H guys have an answer to this question) Im fairly sure that motor is original to the car. So does any one have any idea as to why the big gap between the the motor assly date and the cars build date? Thanks for any input
Hi to a hipo owner.this is a question that is often asked. And to give a proper answer,we need to know where you are reading the date code.Is this the cast in code near the starter motor? If so the explanation is very simple. Please advise, and post again for further details.
You may want the actual build date of the car to make a time chart. The scheduled build date is approximate not definate. The motor assembly on the other hand is dated on assembly. Unless someone stamping the assembly date was getting over a long weekend and misstamped it!! Remember this is pre Ford ads claiming Job #1. I have a 66 289 K from Shelby 6R09K1408XX with casting date 4K29 and assembly date 5L2F. Not sure of the actual car # this motor was removed from but somewhere in the 1200 to 1600 numbered car. Not sure if this will help you get the answer to your question. But it can't hurt.
Hi again to a hipo owner! You are reading the final assembly date code.It is usually a good indicator of when the engine was completed. The casting date down by the starter is generally within a few months of this date. The date the car was scheduled for build simply means all things were planned for this, and if all parts showed up on time, the plant would assemble it.Because this date pre-dates the scheduled production date of the car,it would make sense that this is the correct engine.Any clues for the rest of the driveline..like transmission or rear axle tag?
