greetings to everyone, i am a new member here but have been a saac member for 28 years. this looks like a great sight . i own #1947 67gt500 a factory equipped 427 drag car, one of 3 cars to have a 427 installed at the factory and a one of a kind drag car.
Awesome.. I have read very little about this car in the past years,,,could you post some pics, and info.... Mark
Welcome Joe, That is certainly one of a kind (one of 3 including the Super Snake) Not much in the registry about what shape it was found in. We would love to see some pix! Mike
this car was built for a friend of carol shelbys, clint lunham, he was a banker in san francisco at the time. clint wanted to drag race and asked shelby to build him a car. shelby wrote how he wanted the car built and what modifications. the engine was a cobra s.c. lightweight 427; aluminum heads, water pump, balancer, holman moody 2x4 intake custom headers and exhaust system, heavy duty radiator, no p.s. cobra oil cooler, remote oil filter, c-6 modified by d&h hydro, 3000rpm stall converter, detroit locker 411s, under ride traction bars, shock towers were cut just above a-frames and plated up to the top to make room for spark plug acess and headers. the rear wheel wells lips were cut off, raised and spread a little over an inch and weled back on, still looks like a factory opening just bigger. first owner had car about a year and sold it to someone in the s.f. bay area, car was in an accident with damage to the front left of hood and rear quarter over wheel well. i believe that is when it was painted a pearl white with purple "lace work" some of you "old guys" may remember this ,also had like cotten candy on some places. the car was stolen and recovered in about 69 or 70 and all the running gear was taken, lionel griffin bought the car and installed a 351 and 4 speed and drove the car untill about 73 when he wrecked it . i have had this car since 1980. i did not know how this car came originally untill isue #56 of the shelby american, in there was an artical about the car and it was "owner unknown" i never had paid much attention to this serial # and did not even realize that this was the car i had in my back yard untill i sent my vin# to saac. kopec returned a letter to me statting "your gt500 #1947 is a specially built factory drag car; it had a lot of one-off modifications done at the factory" along with this letter was 6 pages of documents, work orders , and bill of sale. this was like a dream come true. i have since talked with the original owner, still living as of june 07. he can not remember who he sold the car to . if anyone can recall this car please e-mail me. i have posted a link to the saac website with picts.
Gee....If SAAC was stealing cars out from under people why didn't they just buy yours ? Why on earth would they give you such great news and paperwork if they were the crooks some people claim them to be. And they gave you the paperwork for free. Is it finished yet ?
http://saacforum.com/galleryc/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pos=6 try this for the pictures. yes i can't say enough for saac and their help with information on this car, if not for them i would have "fixed" all those modifications to make the car look original. also many years ago #289 one of the other 67 500s that had 427s instaled, was for sale, the owner was not aware his car came from the factory with a 427, the 67 register called him and gave him this info . thank you SAAC.
here are some pictures of #1947 67gt500 drag car, trying to locate 2nd. owner http://www.shelbyforums.com/forum...1202672877tc=1&d=1202672877stc=1&d=1202672877
Welcome to the forums, you have a very interesting piece of Shelby American history. I too am interested in what condition it's in currently and stories about it's drag racing days.
this is an interesting car, thankyou for becoming a forum member. Why do you think it was equiped with a H/M intake? Arent H/M intakes like Shelby lettered intakes? Just Ford with their lettering on to sell aftermarket? Id like to know the size of carbs and if the trany was a Lincoln C6 as used in the twin turbo Cobra of Bill Cosbys and Carroll Shelbys ( cobra to end all Cobras). And yes what kind of times did it run? How does the car look today?
the intake is described as a H/M 425 DUAL MANIFOLD. i haven't found anyone who could identify this number, but the H/M manifolds i have do look just like a ford part. the carbs. were 600's the trans was the mustang c-6 for that year, and that was the weak link in the drivetrain. original owner wanted a 4 speed but Caroll Shelby talked him into the c-6. the trans. gave him alot of trouble, and he sold the car within a year. still trying to find second owner. the car was white and has outboard lights and Z in the serial #. i have some picts on SAAC website in the new photo gallery, look at most viewed. it's at the painter's now, hope to be putting things back on soon.
The reason I questioned the intake, was why would Shelby promote a H/M piece when he would have stacks of medium riser intakes at the build location that would be the same. The carbs sound like stock carbs. The shock tower triming and headers are interesting. This is a great car with a unique and mysterious history. I hope you finish the resto soon. I will check out the photos too. You are a lucky man to own this special car ,enjoy it and cherish it. Good luck!
What an interesting part of Shelby history! Any chance you could scan the sheet with the one off mods listed for all of us to see?
Wow,thanks for joining the sight.great piece of Shelby history to find in your own back yard.Look forward to hearing more on this car in the future! Greg 67 GT 350 Clone with Boss 302 67 GT 390 Fastback 67 GT 289 Hippo Coupe 67 Pro street Coupe Blown stroked 351 67 GTA A code Convertible
