Restoring a 68 GT500

    I am restoring my 68 GT500 after being apart for about 10 years. The engine is out and the engine bay has been cleaned and primered, do I paint the engine bay black, install the engine then paint the car or paint the car first? The car is highland green and looks like the one on the 68 Shelby web site. The floor pans look just as good with 40 year old paint.

    I looked for a build sheet behind the interment cluster and under the carpet but no luck, any more ideas.

    I'll see if I can post some pics of what I have so far.

    The car is 00363.

    Hi Gary,
    The way they were done at the factory was, primer then body color, then blackout. You will also be happier installing the engine after all bodywork/paint is done. Visit Pete's website and checkout his page on paint.

    The way I did my fastback may not be the correct sequence but it worked out good. I painted all the black including the engine bay while it was apart and on the rotissorie. Then we masked off the engine bay and underneath when the body color was applied. It was less masking to do it that way rather than masking off the painted body to spray the engine compartment last.

    Hi Gary

    When i had my 68 GT500 i found the build sheet folded up i a small square behind the speed-o . It was attached to cap screw that held the clip that held the main wire harness.

    My build sheet was folded in a very small square, secured by a fine wire ,high on the left side of the steering wheel, behind the dash.
