Of course everybody has seen the new Giugiaro Mustang, the candy gold two plus two that Ford is showing now in 2007 but that one is designed by Fabrizio, the mop-topped son of Giorgetto Giugiaro, the founder of Ital Design. I recall seeing an earlier Giugiaro Mustang once, parked at the Ford World HQ. This was the first Giugiaro Mustang, done around 1965 for Automobile Quarterly founder L. Scott Bailey. That time it was Giorgetto doing the drawings for Nuccio Bertone who took all the credit (though at least Giugiaro's signature was on the front view drawing) . While it was a pretty svelte car in its time, since subsequently the grille cavity was picked up by Bertone's customers, Toyo Kogyo (mazda) for the mazda RX2 and the roof shape by the mazda RX4, it is not so unique now as it was then. What I am curious about is what happened to it? I saw a couple of letters from L Scott Bailey in magazines pleading for info on its whereabouts and heard it was sold to a Greek shipping captain but then heard a different and more salacious story that it was stolen from a dealership in Monte Carlo. Of course it's kind of silly to steal a car that is so storied in the car literature but there you go, some thieves just steal what strikes their fancy. Does anybody know if it's in a museum somewhere?
I have a picture of that around here someplace. I will try to find it. jimbo After looking at this thing I don't see any Italian anywhere on it... from 5/65 Motor Trend
