Do you remember the first time you laid eyes on your new Shelby ???.... for me it was late November 2002. I had purchased the car from a Kiwi in L.A in August that year . He knew of the car and it's history and confirmed it was the real deal.....(yes i did the obligitory checks with Howard at SAAC). I convinced my wife that this was a deal not to be missed sent my man in L.A the money and waited .....and waited......and waited. Finally it was on the water - packed , stacked and racked in a 40ft container bound for NZ. It took 18 days from LongBeach to Auckland, was unloaded there and then railed down to Wellington to be checked by border control (agriculture and customs). Finally it was given a clean bill of health, all the paperwork was in order, i paid the appropriate fees ............and it was mine !!! Hearing it start for the first time was just heaven - we loaded it onto the trailer and drove 5 hours home.....i just couldn't take my eyes from the rearvision mirror reminding myself that the '66 i had seen on a 14inch monitor was now finally mine.
I heard that this week on my KR. The engine newly rebuilt running 110 octane racing fuel. It just sounds MEAN I have never driven the car 1 foot, that all changes next week when the tach goes back in and I road test it. I have owned it for two years now and have never driven it. I purposely did not repaint the under-body and suspension so I do not feel bad driving it all over. my 67, that's a honey of a car with a brand new under-body and painted suspension. I wipe the whole car down every time I take it out which will be less with the KR here. I drove the 67 GT500 down I-5 Saturday morning 10 miles to our monthly Coffee and Cars show in Carlsbad. Everyone slows down and takes pics with the camera phone, It's a hoot. She chirps going into 3rd (Automatic) which scares the shit out of any unknowing shotgun rider. I had a 2007 GT500 getting on the highway right behind me, he smelled some circa 1967 dual exhaust Mike
Very cool story! To be able to just get in it and drive it 5 hours (without problems, I presume), is icing on the cake
i wish i was that courageous.......no - we took it back home on the trailer and then began the compliance work that had to be done to be able to drive it on nz roads. i changed all fluids (brake, radiator, oil, diff and gearbox) reconditioned the brakes, got the handbrake (emergency brake i think you call it) working again, replaced the oil sender and then it was sweet to drive. It hasnt let me down since although i have had to put a water recovery bottle on it as it was always dropping a little radiator water after having been driven.
I live in San Diego now. It was only 15 miles!!! However, I am going to do some cruises in the KR. Gotta talk to them boys and see what spares to bring with. Radiator hoses are a must I know. Mike
In 1983, I flew fm central Texas to Boston and rented a car to Jaffrey, NH where I first laid eyes on my '67. Made the deal and drove it back to Texas, taking my time and sightseeing for 3 days. It was a blast.
70 GT500 # 2965 First heard it coming down the street. When I saw it I fell in love. I was 14 at the time and didn't have a driver's license. I did know how to drive and burn rubber though! The Original owner rented a house almost across the street from us. I saw the car every morning on my way to school. My best friend Ken who's Mom owned and rented the house to him, which allowed me to get near it all the time. I said " One Day I'll own this car" and a few years later I went on Vacation to Florida. When I got back it was gone as was the owner. I asked around and found that he traded the car in at a (of all places) a Chevrolet dealership nearby. I tracked it down from there and found the new owner about 6 miles away. I contacted him and after several heated discussion ( He didn't know what he had, just thought it was a suped up mustang) I was able to buy it. I was 17 at the time and already owned a 67 Falcon Sport Coupe red/red 289 4 barrell/4 speed car. I kept the shelby and still own it. I turned down 35K in 1988 at a show and I'm glad I did now. Now it's for my only son. He has plans to restomod it. I love the car and hate to see it change but it's his car now and money(Value) to him doesn't matter. He wants a driver, not a trailer queen. I will post pics as I start on this new makeover! There are pics on my webpage www.r-dcustoms.com.
