state of Ohio titles mine as a Ford Mustang and lists only the first 9 serial numbers. Just curious how the other states spec yours. Thanks.

Mine is reg. as 2 door sedan. Does NOT have to be reg. as a Shelby. You mention shelby in this state & they will try to extract every nickel from you.-- S.

Mine says "Ford" 2 dr. That's it.
It's a lot like SAAC pointed out a few years back in a Shelby American: The local old lady in charge of sending in the title info at the dealer just put "Ford" on everything. Who's gonna argue with her??

Best I remember, mine is titled as a Shelby, but NC values all classic cars (i.e. older than 30 years) at $3,500. I didn't argue with the DMV. Just went with what they said!

I'm in Ma. If you reg. as a mustang with the Ford vin #'s only , like any old mustang the regestry would go by the old car book & say it's worth whatever the minimun is. I did not want to take any chances when I'm dealing with theives. My car is made by ford, motor co. it is a 2 door sedan , it has a radio & heater.--S.

In Washington State we only pay $35 for tabs per year no matter what the value of your car is. And if your car is older than 30 years you can title it as a collector vehicle and never pay for tabs ever again. The state will even let you purchase a refurbished period license plates and tabs. Sweet deal if you ask me!

Re: 4/28 J Bailey changing Shelby Mustang Title to Shelby GT 350 etc

Ca.Dmv bases the fee on the purchase price, not the value of the car as I recall.
In California I went to dmv,got a title change form, took it to cHP,and they'd verify through the id it was a shelby. When the CHP signed it off I took it back to DMV and it was changed to Ford Shelby GT350. (That was on a 1966 I had.. Its serial # number was in the 200's )
The problem with that was now your insurance company would know it was a shelby and your insurance would be higher as a result.Actually it was difficult for me to find an insurer for that reason alone.
If you left it as a mustang as I did the rest ,your rates were as a mustang and if you got it damaged they still paid for shelby parts(state farm) If you got it stolen or totaled, youd have to prove it was a shelby, but then they might deny the extra value of compensation since you misreprented it on the forms.
Finally I wised up before anything major occured and just paid the insurance.
You probably cant do it now as theyre more savy about these tricks.
    Anyone know for sure?

I just had my 68 GT500KR Convertible registered in California after restoration. It was last registered in New York in 1982. I avoided penalties for not registering the car within 60 days of it arriving in California by telling the DMV it was trucked into the state and never touched ground in Calfornia. I had to have the car verified by the CHP (an officer was a friend of the restoration shop owner) and I paid the fee on the 1971 purchase price of $2,500.00 which was $71.00. I made sure that the car was described as a "Shelby" on the registration documents and had the full VIN number on the registration which included the Shelby number. This will help reduce any apprehension by anyone that may be interested in buying the car in the future.

Shelby American, Inc. cars are titled in Hawaii under the factory MSO code as Shelby vehicles with the Shelby VIN, not Ford, as the Ford vin is not visible on the 65-66 vehicles (but this is valid through 1970) and the vin for Fords are known to be different. The DMV has a the MSO code for Shelby American, Inc. Clones need not apply. Local insurance does the same. As a SAAC rep., I have assisted other owners of original Shelby Mustangs deal with this issue. Any questions may require a rubbing copy of the Shelby number VIN tag (difficult on some old worn original tags) when registering the car. There is difficulty sometimes if the Shelby American vehicle has a Ford VIN registration from another state. It takes extra work to succeed in getting the title corrected but it can be done.

Because the visible VIN on the car is a Shelby American number, not a Ford VIN. There can be problems if the DMV wants visible verification due to an acident or theft. They don't usually like being told the number on the registration is hidden under a fender. That is the arguement I have used with photos show the Ford and Shelby VIN at registration. The visible Shelby VIN wins. Selling the car and verifying is another long matter that requires more verification and documentation to insure authenticity and value.

If your Shelby has the Ford VIN on the title you have a problem. If your Shelby has Ford listed as manufacturer you do not have a problem, as long as the VIN shown on the title is the Shelby VIN. Many many '65 to '67 Shelbys have Ford listed on the title as the manufacturer, and only VIN listed on the title is the Shelby VIN.

Another nice thing here in WA is if you license the car as a colletor vehicle, you aren't required to run a front plate like everyone else in this state. Works well for me since I'm currently running an R-Model apron.

When I bought my 66 in 1987 it was titled as a Ford Mustang with the Shelby VIN. I decided I wanted it titled as a Shelby so grabbed all my documentation and Registry and had it inspected by the WSP. They had no problem doing that so now it's titled as Make: SHELBY, Model: GT3502D.
