Back in June of 2003, I arranged to have Carroll Shelby and his wife, Cleo attend a event in Tahoe for a big Sunbeam Tiger event. With all the duties that I had to tend to I didn't have the chance to have Carroll sign anything at the scheduled signing time.With the last day of our event upon us and with everybody gone but just a few of us I approached Carroll Shelby and asked if he would sign my 1965 Sunbeam Tiger on the dash. But it wasn't the signature I was looking for, but the chance for him to sit in my car and talk "car talk" with him. The signing of the dash was an added plus. To have Carroll Shelby sitting in my car and saying it was a nice car and taking pictures of him and friends around my car always bring back memories. And after signing the dash, Carroll looked at his signature (He was at an awkward position when signing the dash) he declared "That is one Sh*ty signature". Ever since, my car is now known as the Tiger with the sh*ty signature. Every time I jump in the Tiger, I look over at the signature, it brings a smile to my face and I remember my meeting of an automotive Icon and how I missed the turn off to the airport with Carroll and Cleo in the rental van... When folks first started having him sign portions of their dash in the 80s it was... cute/unique. Having been out of the ring for the last few years other than a few local shows, I can't say for sure, but if the locals are any indication, it's more common than not to have his moniker grace your car as if he stood at the end of the line and placed personal blessings on each vehicle before it left the facilities. I've thought of having my car signed, but where? I'm not a fan of the dash , or paint, or air cleaner... Only the good Lord knows how much longer I have to vascillate about it. **sigh** No, I don't think I'll have him sign my car. It was one among the plethera of "GREEN" '66 company cars. I've never heard just why so many company cars were green in '66. It was either because they resembled the color of money, or they just couldn't get rid of the damn things. The later being the case, he wouldn't have been inclined to bless it-- quite to the contrary, probably just the opposite. If and when the day ever comes that his eligant scrawl is the difference between it selling and not, I'll rest easier in my grave knowing it wasn't an important feature...
