Hello all..me again...need your help please... I tried looking for old threads on gas caps but could not find one.. so here we go..

does anyone have an original gas cap to give referance...

we are not sure if our gas cap is original or not..I think in the registry it says SA just took an original mustang gas cap and put there emblem in it? Anyhow how can I tell if our cap is original? Also is there differences between an original and the service replacemenet..how about the new repops being sold now? We bought a service replacement on ebay but it looks identicle to ours on the car?

Well am eager to see what you guys have to say..

    Thanks!!
    Jimmy

I am correct, the 65 Gas Cap was the same as a Regular 1965 Mustang Gas Cap. The 1966 Shelby Gas Cap is all by it self. No other Gas Cap looks anything like it.

Hello Jimmy, Assuming we are talking about 1966 Shelby gas caps; the 1966Shelby cap is unique to the Shelby. To my knowledge an original Ford service replacement 1966 Shelby gas cap is identical to the original. The reproductions are slightly different in their emblem coloring and have other visible differences on the back side. Hope this information helps .... Rick

Thanks Rick...here is a pic of our service replacement..I can see that the blue for the cobra is lighter than the blue circle around the cap...

Jimmy, Your cap appears to be an original Ford replacement (same as original). The back tells the story. The reproduction caps I have seen do not have the three dimples on the raised area in the center. This raised area is brass / yellow zinc color on the repops. Finally, the repop cap fiber washer is generally dark gray / black (vs natural / cardboard color) and the repop retaining wire is silver (vs dark gray / black) in color with a finer strand appearance. I agree with Rick. The back on the (formerly NOS) service replacement on my car is identical to the original cap except for the patina. While I don't remember the exact wording, the repop cap I have also has stamping on the back indicating it is a repop.
