Notice I use the quotation marks around the word real. There are few items that scream fake. Like the mustang export brace not to mention the pony interior and wood grain dash and knock-off steering wheel. Says it's in the registry, thoughts? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Shel...46771111QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110246771111&
Stuffed if I know how he can come close to calling it "real". It isnt even a rebody - look at the VIN, not even a San Jose body. The original Shelby body was stuffed and some of the parts transferred to a K code Fastback. Thats it. There has to be shill bidding there - why anyone would pay anywhere near that for a K code that has been bastardised? Rohan
My clone has 5X more real parts on it than that car. It doesn't matter though. There is a Shelby provenance behind it. It is in the registry. It counts as a real Shelby. Call it a re-body, call it a number job or an air car. None of that matters. All the parts and number issues that we notice can be remedied. Someday there will be a perfect car for every one of those numbers. jimbo
Complete fake, except Vin tag and a few small items on what looks like a real K GT, he does mention it was stuffed, but strong $ for a tag. There is no way that car could ever be passed off as real to anyone with a little knowledge - the San Jose' build techniques alone are a dead giveaway. Mike
If you read the description he's pretty honest about it being a re-body. He talks about the original Shelby specific parts (obviously not all of them) being transferred to a donor car after the Shelby was badly damaged. He also mentions the pony interior from the donor car was kept. The only thing that's odd about his description is that he refers to the car receiving all the Shelby parts as the donor (well, actually "doner"), when it would be more accurate to refer to the Shelby as the donor. Either way, I don't see that he's trying to pull a fast one. He's very upfront about the history and it is indeed in the registry, like he says. I'm sure Howard will tell anyone who inquires that it's a rebody. Remember that Hertz rebody that was in a dealorship a few months ago on ebay that had been auctioned before that, then returned by the winning bidder? It was identified as a rebody by the members on here due in part to the export brace. It was advertised as having an original Shelby motor not original to the car (they listed the Ford VIN from the motor). I contacted Howard to see if he wanted to try to contact the owner of the car associated with that motor and to let him know there was a Ford VIN on ebay. He said the car for the motor was a total years ago, but in that conversation, it was clear that he knew the car in the listing was a rebody from the info he had. The registry states that it does not identify cars as rebodies in print but will inform anyone who inquires about a car they may be purchasing. In the end, it's not this guys fault people are bidding this thing up for no good reason. I'm a little surprised his reserve is not met, but I think he's listed the car in a completely honest way.
Even if you call it a Clone, the fact that it is a "K" Code Fastbast with a lot of Shelby Parts on it, it is a good deal if it sells at the $65K it is at now. David.
I don't agree. Yes he does mention that all the original shelby items where put on a donor car but he did start the discription, " THIS IS THE 42ND HERTZ GT 350 FROM THE END OF PRODUCTION AND LEFT THE TORRENCE, CA PLANT ON MAY 16TH, 1966." Not the VIN tag is from the original car. The term THIS is pretty self-explanatory. He doesn't even state whether it is an actual K motor. Just my meager thoughts.
The whole description is quite confusing. When i first read it, I thought that this car was the real shelby and when it was wrecked, the shelby parts were swapped onto another car. Later, the original shelby was rebuilt to what it is now, but after rereading it, it does sound like this is a rebody. With his improper use of the term "donor", its hard to tell what is what.
Don't get me wrong, his listing is very confusing. I had seen it before it was posted on the forums and after the first time I read it I was left thinking, "Huh?" I re-read it twice before I determined that he was saying it was a rebody. I think his mastery of the English Language blows, but that he's made an honest effort to be up front about the car's history. In his mind, it IS a Shelby (and the Registry somewhat validates his belief). Depending on how involved one is in the hobby, the degree of negative impact of it being a re-body may not be fully understood. He may not know that all '66 Shelby's started life in San Jose (or that the VIN even indicates that it didn't, for that matter). My only reason for thinking it was an honest way of listing the car was that, in the end, I determined from his listing alone (exclusive of the pictures of the export brace, etc.) that it was a rebody. Granted, he left me thoroughly confused more than once, but I can't blame him for his poor written skills. You make a good point about him stating when it came off the line, but I think that goes back to his uninformed belief that you can swap out the unibody and it's still the same Shelby. I think if he were trying to be deceiptful the listing would not have made mention of the other car at all. It would have been a little tough to explain the interior, brace, etc., but it's ebay... someone would have paid too much. Josh
