Hey everyone...ok just got our correct 66 rear end for our car . Now I need help figuring out the rear case.. I see them on ebay as small bearing or big bearing.. what bearing size is correct for our 66 shelby...next...our sheet metal dates are 3 16, 3 17 ....what dates should be on our rear case and bearing retainer? Do you know what part number should be on the case itself...please please..I know someone knows..I am hoping someone with march 66 sheet metal dates will be able to tell me what there dates are.... Thanks so much again Jimmy
I'm no expert, so I'll help you with what I know to be true, then move on to what I believe to be true and hope that Bob or Jeff or some other guru chimes in... What I know for certain: You need a small bearing housing. The bearing is 1.378" I.D., 2.8246" O.D., 0.8449" width What I believe to be true: You want a housing without the "hump" on the back. Should be round and smooth for early '66. What I don't have a clue about, but should be answered before you purchase: whether or not you should have a fill plug or the two dimples common to round housings with a fill plug. Sorry I can't help you with dates or numbers or backing plates. Hope that's of some help. Sorry I can't answer it all. Someone will, though. Josh
Thanks for chiming in there Josh..I appreciate it...we have car 1902 with sheet metal dates of 3 16 & 3 17..a last week of march build date an april shelby conversion..delivered in May to the dealership...just trying to figure out the date code thing...so far I know from what I have been told is that our radiator should be a month behind our build date..our rear case and tranny should have march dates as well...and our carb should be a Jan or feb but mostlikely a January..our date codes on our glass is 6A 6B...yes waiting for jeff or bob to chime in... Jimmy
The housing should have the hump - not the early rounded version The case would likely (likely because the castings could sit and were not used up in any particular order - and of course you can't see them once installed) a C5AW (from another car in the 1400's) Date could be out in front of the guessed at build date for the car by even 5-6 months from original cars. Sorry have not gotten around to looking (if I can see them) the window dates from our car. Could you remind us again - what number is the car your working on?
Hey Jeff..no worries...our car is 1902..build date..last week of march..3 16 317 sheet metal dates....bo said his friends car is a january build date with a january dated rear case... This date code thing is realy confusing and tuff to keep up with...so far I have heard of one car with radiator dated month before build date...I have been told carb is two months before build date..and tranny should be dated two months prior with assembly date same month as build date.. We have our correct rear end ..now we just need the right dated case...our glass is 6a and 6b..
Compiling all the date info could take months (a short time when you consider getting an answer to just one question posted on a forum would have taken 6 months to a year in the past) In data I've got from original cars I see (quick look at a sheet of info) - trans out as much as 6 months But that is just the case and it appears - by comparing multiple cars - like some other parts the company cast one day - one time to build up inventory then used those cases for a long period Mufflers are the same way.... looks like they made certain mufflers every 4-6 months on rotation - radiator 1-2 months Still not sure how certain we can be about specific build dates since the dates are not recorded anywhere that I'm aware of. Thought that SAAC only had shipping dates. Guess I should ask Howard what he's using. As we collect more info from 67 San Jose built cars with real build dates (and compare them to sheet metal and casting dates) we should get a more exact (if that term can even be used) idea of spreads
Jeff - I was under the impression that the rounded housings were used until part way through '66. Was I completely misinformed, or did the early round housings show up on the very early '66's? I noticed you said a C5AW was in a car in the 1400's, which makes me think I was completely off base with what I thought to be correct. Thanks, Josh
All the running changes can get confusing then add to it that this was a Mustang feature and that Shelby's were not built in specific order using the Ford VIN. But yes the round 65 style was installed on the first 66's (the carry over cars) then in addition approx the next 250 received the rounded rear housing. So that brings us to about (there is not a single number cut off from my understanding) 5S500 when the first 66 style "hump" housings show up
