The offset is the difference in the wheels. Shelby or Ford 65 66 having disc brakes the wheel center needs to be backset properly or the wheel will rub the caliper. I had to place washers between the wheel and hub to set the wheel out far enough to clear my calipers. If the offset had been correct the wheel would clear the caliper. There is about 1/4 inch backspace difference in the wheels I posted and the correct Shelby version.

True for 1969 and 1970, but they did come on Mach 1's in 1971.

Steve, just curious...Did the caliper hit the center section that's welded to the rim of the wheel? Or the inside of the rim itself?

6s524 To answer your question, it hit the rim itself. Just enough near the inside taper of the wheel that when spaced out the rim would clear. 1/4 inch spacers made the difference. Just don't paint the inside heavy! Ha

The depth of the front wheel lip seems quite different when comparing the painted wheels to the chrome wheels with the painted rim appearing to have at least a 1/2" greater depth. It has been suggested that there may more than 1 correct wheel for these cars and this seems possible as responses to this thread continue. As Jeff stated, discussion is good. We really need more part numbers from owners of these cars, especially like the few that have been provided so far. Let's compare some of these numbers and maybe we can determine a little more. There may be just a subtle difference in a number (or even a symbol or figure that's part of the number) that signifies offset, Chrysler vs Ford, etc. etc. I recently bought a set of Ford chrome 14 x 6 magnums, sight unseen--pictures only, with part numbers matching the ones we have discussed. I hope to use them as a correct, or shall I say more correct set for my Hertz car. Time will tell. I will post more info once they arrive.

Here are some pictures of the set of wheels that I recently acquired (mentioned in my last post) to use on my '66 Hertz. I have not tried them on for "fit" as of yet and do not know if they will need front caliper spacers or not. They could use a rechroming but will be decent enough for a driver with a little more cleanup. I tried to show the part numbers on each. One has some rust in that area so all that is visible at this time is the latter part of the numbering. The center is welded all the way around and the weld is almost at the center point of the wheel. Maybe these pictures will help with our discussion. The backspacing on these wheels is 4-1/4".

How to tell a 66 Shelby Magnum ?

I just picked up a 40 year collection of mustang and Shelby parts. This guy had many shelbys in his life.I got some magnums I have never seen before. How can I tell a Real Shelby Magnum?
    Thanks for you time.

The wheel profile looks right to me. Not sure what the "Unistyle" means. Maybe someone else could shed some light. Love the dirt and spider webs on those old parts! What else did you get? :)

Looks as though you have the real chrome magnum 14x6 used on Hertz cars. They look as if they would clean up well. Do you need more or are you selling yours.?

Your Hertz wheels look to be correct! While attending SAAC 33, I was able to see first hand the difference between the correct Hertz wheels and the Mopar wheels (both are 14 x 6 Magnum 500's with similar part numbers). Bill Collins was also of great assistance in pointing out the subtle difference as he had a '66 Hertz for sale with 3 correct wheels and 1 incorrect. As has been mentioned previously in other threads on this topic, the rim is the same for both. It's just that the center spoke section is inset about a 1/4-1/2" further on the Hertz wheel. I have a '66 Hertz that I know has incorrect magnums. By attending the convention, I was able to get some valuable and much needed info thanks to the individuals and cars that were in attendance. And I came all the way from California!

Jack, post some pics of your straight axle 66 and SOHC in your picture gallery! Sounds real cool! I'd love to have a car like that!

Can anyone out there tell me what the correct backspace is for a Hertz magnum? I have a set that I think are correct, but need to know for sure. Thanks

I have some Mopar wheels which are close but not correct and the backspacing is 4-1/4". The correct backspacing for the Hertz wheel is probably around 3-3/4 to 3-7/8".

OK, I am confused.... Can you give me a clue what wheels I have?? I need to take a better shot of my painted magnums. but here is what I have. They are 14X6. They were originally chrome (very poor condition), but I wanted to stick with an "original" theme thought process of a non hertz car, so painted was the way to go. I settled on an "Industrial Gray" appearing powder coat, then I hand painted the black inserts. And, I could not find a chrome shop that would re-chrome them. I did use a set of NOS trim rings, I like the look. I realize they were not stock on the painted Mag500's.

Even though my car is absolutely not an original, all the shelby parts are NOS or original refurbished parts, including a set of Cummins& Sanders IMPACT competition seatbelts.

I paid $20 dollars for the wheels, in 2000. Also, no safety bead. I am pulling them tomorrow to see the part numbers. I am just curious.............. PoFoMoCo
