Hi my 68 gt500kr is my pride and joy! I have a question tho. the front quarter panel emblems need to be re-installed on the car but I can't find the measurements anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find the measurements? or would be willing to measure them for me? with pictures?

    thanks in advance.

I should probably add this to my website. Most of the KRs I have seen are messed up. I suggest you lay this out with masking tape.

You need to have the rocker panel stripes on the car. There are several different stripe kits floating around. Find the center of the "GT500 KR" script. This will establish a vertical centerline for installing the emblems. Your centerline should run up perpendicular from the rocker stripe.

Now, measure down 2 1/4 inches from the crown of the fender highlight and mark a horizontal line with masking tape.

Set the "Cobra Jet 428" emblem first. The top edge of the emblem will be on the horizontal line you established. To find its left and right orientation, you need to lay out the two emblems (before the backing paper is removed) and measure horizontally across the two. Again, divide by two. That spot goes on the vertical centerline you previously established. I want to say the right edge of the "O" in the word "Cobra" is on the vertical centerline (from memory)

Once you have the "Cobra Jet 428" emblem positioned, add the snake.

The emblem will sit very high on the fender. The snake is to the left of the "Cobra Jet 428" emblem ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR AS YOU LOOK AT IT. If you did this correctly, the snake's head will just touch the spot where the fender highlight starts to bend outward.

Also keep in mind the snake's chin should be very close to the "C" in the word Cobra, but NOT TOUCHING". The snake has a rounded bottom so you need to keep him level as well.

Here is a picture of an original untouched:

Pete, your answer is more detailed than the discription on your site. But your link will not open.

    Ha, fixed it now....

If those directions don't work, let me know.

If they do, post a picture so we can mock you.

Gentlemen thank you very much, I will be attempting this  next weekend and will post the after pictures. Attached is the before. ( yes with a 63 split window stingray poking its behind into the picture. Those bowties never quit ^_^ )

    Steve

By the way how do you embed the pic into the post. I can only attach it.

By the way looks like I'm in line to pick up a blue/silver 08 GT500KR. (got the call today) :)

LOL, When i bought the car I was told that it had been painted a different color than orig. I never put much thought into it. But after checking out coralsnake's website I went back and looked at the door plate and low and behold there is no number in the paint block, further inspection reveals the code WT-6066 on the fender paint. So i guess it was one of the "special paint cars" I guess I have a long road of disassembly/restoration to go on. Pete how should I go about getting the yellow? I put in an email to dupont today with the codes on your website. I'm waiting for a response. you can see from the gas tank what the orig was. Sorry about the quality of the pics.

    Stephen,

A body shop supply store or paint vendor should be able to come up with the exact color by cross referencing those codes. If not, I have some more.

Welcome to the exclusive "special paint" club. I have run across several special paint cars that were repainted and "lost". It is good to have you back.

Look for some updates to the website in a week or so.

    Pete

Pete , how many of these special paint cars are still around? (not crashed or burned), and was this a car that you were looking for?

    Stephen,

There are 159 1968 Shelby Special Paint cars. There were 144 yellow cars (94 fastbacks and 50 convertibles). Your car (#4166) is 1 of 86 GT500KR fastbacks. 8 were yellow GT350 fastbacks.

I am looking for all of them. I am also contributing this information to the new Shelby Registry.

I can do a count, but I would guess around 80% are accounted for. There are several more that have some information or paperwork floating around. So, it's pretty hard to find one I am missing.

Do you know your original dealership? My book is not handy.

Only a small percentage of the cars have no information at all.

I can tell which cars are yellow, because there is only one missing non-yellow car. Oh, that yellow on your tank is from a prior repaint, so you must be going for number 3.

pete, the dealership was Tasca Ford in RI. I have the orig recipt and will get it to you as soon as I find it in the boxes of paperwork I have. Also I vaugely remeber a dealership window sticker lets see if i can find it. Whatever I find i will scan and send to you for your website. As to my previous question that i did not word correctly: Out of the 86 KR FB that were yellow, how many are left on the road (meaning not junked, crashed, burned). Is there only a few left out there? I am planning on restoring the car to its orig color and will never sell it, but does the color add any more value to the car? The KR is rare to begin with but does this make it even rarer? (not as rare as your coralsnake tho) :)

I would like to believe "special paint cars" are more valuable, but color choice is a subjective thing. Some people like it and some don't. They cancel each other out.

One thing is for sure, you will get more attention being bright yellow.

I show 63 of the 94 fastbacks have someones name attached, there are another 20 more that have paperwork and ten that have nothing. Of course, several of those thirty cars are around hiding. Even if we "guess" half, that would be 78/94 of these yellow fastbacks survive. That's over 80%.

Little update..... OK so now (with the help of CoralSnake) I've established that the car is a special paint yellow car. So I'm gonna need to do a full frame off to restore it to its orig condition. I have checked and I have the orig rims and hubcaps I also the orig poly glass tires. plus many more things that I never knew about. CoralSnake's website has been invaluable!!! One question tho, I went to drive it last weekend and noticed a strong fuel smell in the car. Investigation shows that the top of the fuel tank has pin sized holes in the top of it and when the car is jacked on one side (like i had it last weekend installing the rocker panel stripes, pics to follow) fuel leaks out the top into the trunk. So I need to find a replacement tank that I can use to drive the car for this summer then I'm gonna start the frame off this winter. Does anyone know where I can find an acceptable replacement?

Most vendors sell the American designers tank for around $100. Buy one with a drain
