Remember when it was said in the media that the reason for the demise of the high horsepower cars was due to insurance rates or liabilities?
Why isnt that applicable today. Inspite that the cars are faster and there are more of them I havent head a peep from the insurance companies, press or politicians yet. Whats up? Is it on the horizon?

Maybe the cars are just safer today. We now get brakes that work well, air bags everywhere, back up sensors, better headlights, crumple zones, etc. I don't know, just a guess.

I've thought about this as well because I'm ordering the new GT500 and am worried about super high insurance prices. The insurance on my 1968 Firebird is only $160 a year but it's titled as a collector car and is only driven on special occasions. I'm hoping to find some type of insurance like this for the new car. Even though my record is clear, except for that dumb deer that hit me a few years ago (yes, the deer hit me. Just ran smack into the side of my car), I'm still concerned about skyrocketing premiums.

Lets try this. Back in the 60's, a stock boy at a local grocery store could make the payments (all 36 of them) on any number of muscle cars. So, many of them ended up wrecked.
Nowadays, I don't think too many high school seniors can afford a $20,000 plus muscle car.

I believe insurance rates played a minor role in the death of the breed...

...it was more a combination of these factors:

Federal Safety and Emissions standards.. and, later, the Gas Crisis.

Remember when the price of gas went up and the the price af all gas guzzlers sank? That was a buyers dream. Fortunately I had the foresight, but not enough money to do much about it.
I wonder what effect the possible future with gas holds for values ?
Something to think about and plan for?

Speaking as a High School Senior, it is a sad fact that no one my age takes pride in their cars anymore. Kids either have a Saturn or an import that serves solely as transportation, or if they do have something nice (nice nowadays being a WRX or GTI) their parents bought it, so they don't treat it the way they should. I was lucky enough to finda and have the money for something that can flog any car in my parking lot, and I payed for it, so it is my baby.
