My car has the original spare-wheel setup with a steel wheel, face down, jack underneath, and jack handle holding the wheel down with a j-hook and wingnut. I want to change to a 10 spoke spare-wheel. I realize that few if any cars came this way so is there even any such thing a "correct" setup? I assume that the most correct arrangement would be a longer j-hook with a washer and wing nut...that would allow the the 10 spoke to be face-up with the jack and jack handle stowed underneath? If this is correct, can anyone tell me the correct length and thread for the j-bolt, and the correct size washer...or maybe the NPD part numbers? I have all my original wheels and caps, and my 10 spokes are old repros, so a repro hook, washer, and wingnut is fine for my purposes.
The original setup would have the spare mounted face up. I would think you could use the 69 style J bolt and the lug wrench across and keep the 10 spoke faced up as well
My original trunk sticker showed the steel wheel face-down, with the rest of the parts as I described them. The hook isn't long enough to mount the steel wheel (or any other wheel as far as I can figure) face-up. That's why I'm looking for different parts... So what gives???
I tried to edit my prior post with no luck. When you said "original setup" did you mean original 10-spoke setup? Was there any such thing? Wouldn't a setup for a '69 with styled steel wheels have a large diameter washer...or were you talking '69 Shelby?
Here is the way the original mounts, If you have the 3/8" diameter short j hook, that is the 67 version. The 68 uses a 1/2" diameter j hook that goes up through the hole in the jack handle. The reason I said 69 j hook is it is a little longer than the 68 version which would accomadate the 10 spoke, valve up, and the handle.
Ok, now I'm really confused. If that's the way the steel wheel is supposed to mount, then my hook has to be wrong, because it isn't long enough...it's only about 6-1/4" long and will only work with the wheel face-down. It was in the car when I bought it in '72, it's 1/2-13 (not 3/8), and it looks OE, but it's the sort of thing that could easily have been lost and replaced...so is it for certain that it can't be the right one? Can you tell me how long the hook in the photo is, and if there are any markings on it that can be used to identify an original? I'd like to be on the lookout for one if that's the correct part. FWIW, someone else has told me that the Osborne Body Manual for the '68 Mustang shows the steel wheel face-down and the styled steel wheel face-up. I don't have a copy to check that but, if true, why would they have assembled the Shelbys differently?
