Just changed out what I thought was a 289 for what I know is a 289. When I looked into the coding stamped on the block, I am not finding much. The one that I thought was a 289 is 040E-6015C. Had mixed results when I searched on the web. The one I installed has a code of C5AE-6015E. I thought they were the same motor, but my original water pump wouldn't fit, and the bolts that mount the bell housing to the back of the motor were different. Bolts on the motor that came out were 3/8", but the motor going back in has 7/16" bolts. Can anyone tell me just what I've gotten myself into? I'm afraid to drill out the holes on my bell housing, but I don't know what choice I have. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I suspect that one is C4OE-. The numbers are actually casting numbers and should not be confused with actual part numbers. The date codes would also be helpful here. The same displacement engine might actually have two different casting numbers. I believe it does in the case of the 289s
I am with Coralsnake on it is probably a C4OE- and would also guess it is a 5 bolt bellhousing pattern instead of a 6 bolt which the C5 block would be. I am not around any of my reference material right now, but think the 5 bolt 289s used a different water pump than the 6 bolt blocks and if so that could explain the water pump difference also. Jay
Well, good news and bad. You are right, my old motor was a 5 bolt housing, and my new motor is a 6 bolt housing. :-( Does anybody have an idea on where I can pick up a 6 bolt bell housing? I've looked a couple of places on-line, but haven't had much luck.
6 bolt housings are very common (much more so than a 5 bolt housing) and should be available from most parts vendors and e-bay, but you may another issue. Typically, the 5 bolt housings have what is called a narrow tranmission mounting pattern. Early 4 speed transmissions had their mounting bosses a couple of inches inboard from the later trannys. If you have a narrow pattern tranny, you will need to find a dual mount(has the narrow and later mounting bosses) 6 bolt housing. These are tougher to find, but are still out there especially as a "Cobra" reproduction. Don't panic if you find you have the narrow pattern tranny, as all of the parts you need should be out there. You will just need to understand what you need and ask for the corrrect things. Just out of curiosity, what kind of car are you working on? If orginality is needed, maybe you should sell the 6 bolt block and go back to rebuilding the 5 bolt one you have, or buying a rebuilt 5 bolt version. Good luck. Jay
