Junkyard Shelby: Are you sure? 3248 is a Hardtop...

  1. I believe 3248 is/was a Grabber Green hardtop bearing
    VIN 0F02R483248. I can't find any reference for a
    9F03R483248 but maybe I'm working with old info...

    Are you sure about that VIN?

  2. Here is what the guy e mailed me about the car - he is the one that took the
    photo - again, I save EVERYTHING and always have a source to refer back to
    or I don't put it out there for people to read...............


    I just got back from talking to the owner of the 1969 GT500. So this is what
    I found out. Some guy ordered it, when it came hugger blue, then he had the
    dealer paint it red because he did not like the blue. Then this guy never
    showed up with the money to buy it. That is when the current owner bought it
    in 1970. It is a 1 owner car. The red paint job started flaking off in 3
    months or so and he had it painted silver. After 3 months of driving the
    crank broke in the original motor and destroyed the block and ford replaced
    it with another factory replacement engine. Then after 2 years that 428
    threw a rod and the current owner pulled that motor and discarded it and put
    in a 390 that was lying around. So the 2 complete original motors are long
    gone. Then he ran off the road and ripped most of the front suspension and
    driver side rocker panel off and had to have all that fixed. Since he was
    having the other stuff fixed he decided to sand the body down to bare metal
    and fiberglass and paint it corvette midnight blue. So then it was driven
    until 1979 when it was parked outside and has not moved until 3 years ago
    when it was put into a barn. The passenger door is missing because a horse
    backed into it and caved it in. So he took it off and threw it away. Most of
    the frame and everything underneath the car is severely rusted and all the
    lower body panels are have been eaten away because of the frame laying on
    the ground via the flat tires. The hood is cracked and smashed at the nose
    and one of the ram air scoops is missing a large chunk. The hood has about a
    1" high center bow in it compared to the fender line. So I talked to him
    about selling it and he said he thought about it because he does not have
    the time or money now to fix it, but his wife does not want him to sell it.
    So he thinks he is going to "restore" this car himself. And since he has no
    experience doing anything like a restoration, he thinks this car will be " a
    fun project" for him and his wife. So he told me he did not want to sell it
    today. The VIN# is 9F03R483248. So I will call him a couple times a year to
    see if he wants to sell it until he does or until he ruins a perfectly
    salvageable cobra. What are your thoughts on this? What do you think it is
    worth after all it has been through? Thanks very much for you time on this.

    This story reminds me of the time I bought a small block Cobra at a Flea
    Market. It was Sapphire Blue. I didn't like the color so I sanded it down
    with 20 grit sandpaper, only to find that under the blue was yellow paint
    and a sticker attached to the cowl that read Shelby Prototype. I removed
    the sticker and threw it away, because I didn't like where it was located
    and it was not applied straight. Because I didn't feel the Cobra had enough
    power, I removed the Ford 260 V8 and installed a Chevy 283 which required
    cutting the firewall and removing the hood and sectioning the frame and
    replacing the front suspension (I used parts from a MG Midget) because of
    space limitations. I made a new hood from paper Mache with a rear facing
    cowl induction hood scoop that required moving the windshield back 10
    inches and changing the rake to a near vertical position. I replaced the
    Halibrand magnesium wheels with the latest craze at the time, chrome baby
    moon hubcaps on 14 x 5 steel wheels, painted
    flat black which contrasted nicely with the baby moons. I drove the car for
    16 months and after backing it into a Caterpillar bulldozer in Wal-Mart
    parking lot, I sold it for a nice $125.00 profit and bought a very nice
    used Vespa scooter. The Cobra is currently parked outside next to a caustic
    chemical recycling plant in Lake Charles, LA where the current owner is
    planning a frame off restoration and conversion to a personal water craft. ;)
