Was on the phone to kelsey tire today, when I asked about the speedway 350 tires I was told that the first 7-9% of 1967's had large letters, then went to the small letters. I was then told that all 1968's had large again?? It doesn't seem logical to go from one tire and change and go back to the same tire the following year? I've seen different styles in alot of sales literature. But did the early production cars use the new small letter and large letter tires before they went to the blackwall? Or would they have just continue with the small letter tire?
I'll go have a peek, ....... That was a good read, thanks guys..I guess logic has nothing to do with it!
For 68s I think you'd only find small letter on pre strike cars, then large letter, then blackwall around April
tlea, so small letter up to and around mid sept., then large letter from late Nov., then black wall from April on.
I have #0056 built the first week in sept and it has the original spare with small letter tires. chuck
Tim I have had this conversation with Pete. I have seen the large letter on the early 68 cars like what you see in the early assemblyline photos which provides provenence and then later cars got the small letter which I have found in numerious later VIN 68 trunks (too many later cars for me to dismiss). Then the blackwall polyglas came out to the end of production and on into 1969 production. I am not trying to be contrary and only am trying to get at the actual facts what ever that ends up being.
Bob, any chance you could post a pic of early production cars with large lettering and some sort of date to confirm? My two convertibles have large lettering on them now, but would like them to be correct if I can. [one had a large lettered spare ,but no way to confirm it was original to that car] thanks,Chris
Bob, Its hard to get a good handle on the early (pre strike) ones because there are so few examples. It seems the protos were actually destroyed and other than that there are only a handful of cars built before Nov (like Chucks) I've got some examples of cars Nov-March with original tires and most seem to be large letter. Ironically it seems most cars that still have original spares are later B/W versions. I even have an example of what appears to be original spare with a small white letter Goodyear polyglass.
There's a complete set of large letter Speedways on ebay now, advertised as originals: Not a bad price even if they turn out to be repros. It took me 10 years to assemble a set of original small letters Speedways for my car, but then I am a cheap bugger
