Hey guys..starting the restoration on our rear end...66 nine inch Three questions... 1. are the bearing retainer plates supposed to be pained semi gloss black like the housing and backing plates or what?????? 2. Next...what can I use to clean the third member case and yoke to take it back to a clean fresh cast look so that I can have it painted ...I dont want to take it to have it sand blasted or anything like that..I was hoping for some sort of chem I can just apply and rinse off??? 3. what can I use to get a factory look on the ends of my axles where the studs are at Any suggestions would be appreciated and any detail pics of anyones elses restoration work on these parts would be great.. ..need to get moving on this ... Guess I'll post a duplicate to what I responded with on the other site ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ - Going to have the housing and backing plates painted semi gloss black. - OK - typically backing plates would have been a little more gloss due to the way the paint was applied - going to have the third member painted red oxide with DP74 - OK Don't forget the bare machined surfaces. On the pinion retainer and the two ones on the bottom of the case - not sure if the bolts that hold the pinion support should be painted or what?? - None of the bolts or washers (Don't forget the coppper washers under the case nuts) were painted - I dont know what color the bearing retainers should be painted if at all ??? - In the third member? No one will see them so leave then unpainted. Bearing retainers on the axle were bare steel - what should be the finish on the axles where the drum mounts and how to get that finish? - Axles were bare steel - a hardened steel (dark) look with machined surfaces at the end. WHeel studs were a very dark heat treated steel - what should be the finish of the yoke and round piece behind it? - Yoke is cast steel, washer behind a slightly shinny bare new steel look. End of pinion a dark heat treated steel look as well as the retaining nut and washer

Jeff, should the backing plates be dipped or sprayed? [they always looked dipped to me, but not 100% sure]. I found a March '97 mustang monthly that Bob Perkins did an artical on 1966 9' mustang axle housing detail. Talks about every thing from machine surfaces to correct brake shoes. A good article.
Yes believe the backing plates were dipped - likely the reason for the slightly higher gloss Old articles are often helpful just be aware that they can contain old or incorrect (because of more recent information) information
Just a general statement about being careful about any print information. Specifically I will have to dig out a copy (if I have one) to review it and then comment
Ok..just cleaned up our original factory third member..here are some pics of the markings on it..not sure what they mean but if anyone wants to chime in..not sure how to remark them once we get it painted... -first two pics are of the # 12 painted in white.. -The next two are pics of the bottom of the case near the pinion support..clearly some sort of H or I dont know....in a red paint..brighter than the red oxide color on the case.. -Next pic is a yellow paint mark on the yoke -Next pic shows two horizontal white lines at the top of the case -The next two pics are wierd markings done in a light blue color on the left side of the case -The next two pics are hard to make out but they are pics of the right side of the case near the pinion support...cant make out what was there but definetly white paint marks in that area... well tell me what you all think...
