I am thinking about doing what I can to boost my shelby's performance. Since it already has upgraded exhaust, intake, and tuning, I want to know what other people have added? I think there are better airintake systems and maybe new headers, I am looking for at least 50+hp but I dont want to void warranties.
I saw on http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-2571 that a K&N filter added 53hp to a gt500, has anyone tried it? and would it give similar performance gains to a GT?
Hi Shelby Beast: I have your same vehicle in Black and Silver. Your Shelby GT comes with an after market CAI made by steeda. Steeda, however, did not include their "Pro Flo Elbow" with the kit. Steeda claims another 15 HP with the elbow. The huge increase advertised on the GT 500 is due to the masive throttle body that comes stock on it. It is a 68 MM, as opposed to your 55MM Body, that we have. By the way, DO NOT change your Throttle Body! I have read as much as a 105 HP increase on a Ferrari, with a new CAI, but, look what you are starting with! Airaid makes one of the more powerful after market CAI's, however the Airaid , and most others require a retune. C&L claims it is plug and play, but, I'll bet you a dollar that you will see your check engine light, if you install one without a tune. The elbow from Steeda makes your Ford Racing Unit a formidable Air Input. Start with the CAI of choice, but, buy yourself a tuner. The Diablo Predator works well for me and it will give you 15 to 20 more RWH. Your performance tune is completely reversible for return stealership service. You can also buy CAI's along with a tuner for your specific vehicle, although, usually the tuner is liminited in it's applications. Good luck! Bill
Thanks Bill, I looked up those 2 parts and im ready to order. I just have to find out if these will cause a problem with my warranty. I have heard that flash tuners can void it, does anyone know if this is true?
I also found a lot of people use the SCT excallibur to tune. How does it compare to the diablo predator?
The Elbow and most other after Market CAI's will not effect your warranty in any way. The Ford dealerships all offer the K&N CAI in their parts dept. The tuner will allow you to return your vehicle to a stock "Flash" condition prior to going back for service. Normally, depending on what you are taking the car in for! In most circumstances, they have no need to look at the tune. However, if you get crazy and break something, or any serious repair issue, if you left the performance tune in it, there could be problems. If there was an emergency, and you had no time to reinstall the stock tune, just play dumb! How could you have any idea how to increase timing or fuel ratio, got out of adjustment. The tuner leaves no footprints. Once you have your tuner, don;t play with the tunes (Increase Timing or whatever). The performance tunes you will have available have all been optomized for 87,91 and 93 Octane gas. These tunes are dyno tested and represent the best possible performance, while still maintaining a safty margin for your engine. Pay no attention to suggestions of Nitro power or increased spark advance, they will get you into trouble. Good luck/ Bill
I have the same GT Black and silver... I had the entire exhaust replaced headers back. JBA shorty headers, Custom X pipe, and Roush exhaust. Believe me the sound is worth the money and the car runs alot smoother. I am putting the Steeda Carbon Fiber CAI with a SCT tune this week Im just waiting for a call back from springfield motor sport... I plan on putting a supercharger in it too but the 4.6L engine wolnt be able to handle over 500 HP so more work will have to b done to the engine if I do go that route..
Ok, I have the same 07 SGT as you all. I'm ready to upgrade the CAI and tune. Can you tell what parts I need to purchase? Where to get them at? will I be able to do the CAI and tune installs myself or would I need to have a mechanic perform the upgrades?
Steeda makes the best CAI which I have for sale its about 600$ and im selling it for 400$. Honestly your not gonna see alot of increase in HP or performance unless you buy a good CAI, and even then youll maybe see about 5 HP but ur gas mileage will be a little better. Now since you want a new CAI your going to have to tune it... You can get any tuner out there and Id say buy a tuner not a chip. 1st of all because the chip is only 1 tune if you ever change anything again you will have to change the chip. 2. if you want to keep your warranty you cant take it to the dealer with any other tune than stock which you can easly switch it back with most tuners. Id say get a SCT or diablosport tuner I have sct but im looking to change it to the DaibloSport Trinity. You can install the CAI and tune it all your self.. and if you need more help with tuning the car just ask places like this... Now I admit the car runs alot better with the tune and CAI but if your doing this for bigger power and HP then your pretty much wasting your time. The best way to tune the car is on the dyno.. which i did and my results were very frustrating.. I had 293.58 rwhp and 306.28 ftof tq which is about 345 HP... thats with the tune the CAI and a full exhaust system headers back. now i wish i had put the car on the dyno stock then after the exhaust but because I didnt i have no idea what the stock was actually running shelby claims 325 so i got 20 more HP outta 4K i spent i was hoping more like 390HP or 400.. So thats just something to think about... Im in the process of a whole new project now Im putting in a Aluminnum FR500 block with custom pistons and headers all forged to take the power of the whipple s/c. I swaped the tranny to a viper spect t56 6 speed and changed the clutch to a mcleod twin disc. As well i needed a gt500 fuel pump steeda belt system for the s/c and i swapped the shorty headers i had for full headers and a new mid pipe with cats. were starting it out on 550 HP but the engine will hold any amount of HP i want on there so i will probably boost it up more and more getting use to it. My aim is 700HP anyways hope this was helpful..
You may want to look at the Shelby Autos web site about the supercharger up grades and other performance mods being offered at the factory.
