    Hello Jimmy,

Effren Trejo just bought a Steering box tag from me just last Saturday. It was a HCC AW tag, which is for a power steering box with the same ratio as the HCC AX box for GT's and GT350's. I don't know if he bought it for #6S1902. The date codes that are on it I believe would corrispond to the approximate construction date of the car. Just an FYI.

Hey earl...thanks for that info...yea he is my father and he just pointed me to this site yesterday I am trying to help him detail his car out..starting with the engine compartment..just got ahold of pardee and he gave us some good info on our car...and that tag is now on my dresser...I told him to buy that tag..but I had forgot it was the ax and not the aw that we needed....how do you interpret those tag numbers by chance?...I was told I can find that info in the back of the 97 registry..but its like over 100 for that book...hoping to get that info for free..I know...probably will get the book...our car was delivered in may of 66 to hayward..waiting to see with Howard sends us to see if there is an actual build date we can refer to..The tag you sold us has a 6c09b

    Hi Jimmy,

To interpret 6C09B / 6 =1966, C=March, 09=the date, B=(2nd) shift. You and I have have had corrispondance over regular email. Just to refresh your memory, I asked you if you still had the R model rear window spacer you were selling on ebay. I still have your email address I'll take this off line.

    Thanks,
    Earl

You'll need to wait for the paperwork or estimate from the Ford VIN the approx build date at Ford for your car before you get a tag made since the Shelby VIN does not tell us what you need.

As for the engine tag.... not a Shelby thing ;) for that year

Jimmy, my Shelby VIN, 1757, is pretty close to yours. I have both original tags, when I get home from work tonight I'll post the info here. Dave

Jimmy, here's the info from the original tags for 6S1757:

    Diff tag:
    -------------
    DSO C6ZX-B
    3.89 6BD 925
    -------------

    Steering box tag:
    -------------
    HCC AX
    6C10B
    -------------

I believe if the car originally had a locker there would be a "L" after ther ratio (3.89 L).

    Hope this helps,
    Dave

    Dave,
If the car had a locker originally, it would probably be
    3L89.

The date on your original, isn't it 6BB?
You sent me a picture of it some time ago
    and I saved a copy.

    Hi Bo,

Yes, I think you are correct about the locker designation. Without actually crawling under the car, all my notes and pics show the date code on my diff tag to be 6BD. I know when we discussed this in the past we talked about a 6BB date code but I thought that was from another car? Guess I need to get under there and take a clear pic to verify since the only one I can find is very blurry but all my notes say 6BD. Please email me the one you have a copy of and hopefully I'll recognize if it's one I sent you. The only one I have shows the tag installed on the diff.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Generally the "L" normally identified a traction-lok or other "posi" type of rear end - open rear ends did not have the "L"

    Sorry Dave,
I am getting old. The picture with the 6BB tag, I got from England
and not from you. Of course, you know the dates on your car.
    My bad.

I agree with Jeff . It can be confusing because in the case of the "L" it seems that it was used for Detroit locker in 1965 Shelby production and when Shelby stopped using the Locker and switched to Traction Lock the same designation was used. According to factory paperwork the Detroit Locker was dealer installed starting sometime in early 66 production. Bob

can anyone correlate the engine assy date that is stamped on the front of the engine driverside below the head to the assy date of the steering box tag??

Have one owner so far stating
Found the steering box tag reads, HCC AX 5G 21 C ...july 21st 1965 third shift

Build date on my engine is 23 July 65,Hope this helps.

at least this engine and steering box were done at the same time...anyone else got there original engine and tag???

Was there not some company out there making repo tags licenced by ford??thought I read that???

Since the engines and steering boxes were assembled a fair distance from each other I doubt this example is anything more than a coincidence.

I just started putting together a spreadsheet with VINS, build dates (or projected ones) and dates from all available parts (sheet metal to mechinical) Of the few I have both engine assy date and steering box dates (200 cars entered so far) I see one with 5 dates difference and one of three weeks - in s quick scan of the data

Kevin Marti does some of them

The original engine on 5S275 was assembled on May 3, 1965, 5E3
and the steering box tag says April 30, 1965, 5D30.

I'm going to work on mine this weekend (Finally beginning to look like a car again.) I'll retake the picures of the rear end tag and the steering box tag. I have the orignal short block out of 6S1855, I'll take pictures of all the block numbers.
