I recently purchased an intersting GT500. This car was built by Ford for display in auto shows before production GT500's were available. It is Torch red, black & red leather interior, cloth black top, etc. The paint is flawless, fit and finish is first class and as she sits in my garage today, has 1482 miles on the odometer. Ford ordered this vehicle through the normal order bank - however, ordered a Mustang GT premium with the spoiler delet option. It was shipped directly to an outside supplier who completed the transformation to a GT500 - complete with all exterior markings, complete suspension package, Brembo brakes, Shelby body panels, interior compoments, six speed shifter, instrument panel, etc., etc. This vehicle was displayed around the country as a 2006 Mustang Shelby GT500 and to the trained eye - it was exactly as it was presented. Off to the side somewhere a 5.4 4 valve was displayed as the moster power plant for this vehicle. It all made for a great mouth watering, excitement creating - really awesome display. A surprise lurks under the hood(yes- the official GT500 hood). Under the hood lies a 4.6 3 valve with a 5 speed transmission. Why? Simple. Production had been delayed, securing the official Shelby unit was not yet an option and once it became an option, availability was very low and very expensive. This vehicle successfully displayed the GT500 look, style, stance and excitement. No - it was never sold as a Shelby, never represented to be eligible for the Shelby registry, nor was it ever misrepresented in any way. The display package did what it was supoposed to do and this unit was relagated to aback lot somewhere for the next few years - where I stumbled across it by accident. I know what it really is - and now so do you. I love it just the same.
Interesting story. What kind of documentation did you receive with the car? Did you also get the display 5.4 engine? robin
It's fully documented - from order sheets to build sheets and a list of shows (when & where) Ford Motor Company displayed it. Some have indicated it could be worth serious cash some time - others disagree. Doesn't much matter since I simply enjoy driving it and have no intention of selling.
