Does anyone know where or who can rebuild our radiator cap??? is it even possible...I thought I seen a rebuild kit by AMK on eBay one time??
In the past before they started selling repops AMK sold restored originals. They are very nice IMO, I'm using one on my car. Have seen them occasionally on ebay.
yea we located a very nice minty looking original..except the bottom needs a rebuild to hold the water and pressure..so its basicaly useless unless it can be rebuilt..AMK said they dont sell rebuild kits..I wonder if they would rebuild ours for us anyhow?? Well...lets see
If the chrome on your "minty original" is still good you should be able to disassemble one of the concours repros (I bought the one I used from Mansfield Mustang) and use the parts from it to "rebuild" your original. It is not necessary to remove (and destroy) the center rivet in the cap to do this...again assuming that you don't need to rechrome the cap.
AH..THATS A GREAT IDEA...BEFORE i DESTROY ONE CAN YOU TELL ME THE STEPS ON HOW TO DISSASEMBLE ONE AND REASSEMBLE? THANKS SO SO MUCH..
I don't remember exactly, it's been a long time and I don't have it handy to look at it. The multiple pieces are just crimped and/or swaged together...once you pop off the first piece I think it becomes obvious how the rest of it is held together. As I recall the center piece that retains the spring is the hardest part...you have to carefully "unroll" the "swaged" metal, and then redo it again...it won't be as pretty as it originally was, but it will not show once the cap is completely assembled. It definitely isn't rocket science though, so I don't think you'll ruin it. As you said, the original with cracked rubber is useless anyway, so you may as well open it up and have a look. The repro I bought from Mansfield was constructed exactly like my original, but my original was a 17# and the repro is a 13# so I reused the spring from my original.
