Hi to Bob and all,I use Ditzler code 13356 and catalize it for durability. If you must use a spray can...try Krylon 1923.They still make the best engine compartment touch up black spray paint 1613 semi flat black.Hope this helps!

For the small block I've been hard pressed to find a rattle can closer than Plasticote - Think the number is 224 but I would have to double check. Have compared all the rattle cans to original parts and its the closest.

IF it was a big block then there is a Duplicolor that IMHO is closer to what was used on them

MAKE SURE that the cans come from the same batch. The batch# is printed on the bottom. Buy plenty - 4 cans should do.

I bought the Krylon from two different places (different batches) and they were noticeably different shades.

The Krylon semi gloss black 1613 that everyone likes to use has been discontinued. It has been replaced with a black "satin". It has a little different look. I don't like it as much but it isn't too bad. I have looked for the 1613 and all the "NOS" 1613 (ha ha) is gone from my area. Bob

I will pass it along so to get it while we can. Jeff Y is a Krylon dealer and can't get the 1613 anymore. All new orders have come in the new Satin Black. Bob

Wonder if its a misprint (must be somewhere)

Either its an enamel (since its listed as 1613) or a lacquer and the Krylon number is wrong.

The six minimum should not be an issue IMHO with mail order, if your mail ordering this you don't want to just by a couple of cans.

    They also carry these

You haven't read all the posts. We went a little off track when the engine compartment touch up paint was mentioned and I made a comment about it's availability. No one is suggesting painting the engine in question black. As far as your spray paint can is concerned it is common knowledge among restorers and a lot of enthusiasts that various paint companies vary their spray can formulas. This info was trying to be shared in a positive way. The Ford Engine Dark Blue is one that varies in shade depending on the MFG used. Some match the factory color better then others. Bob

Mr. Cooper DE-1606 is a shade darker than I wanted to put on my 1967 GT-350 But "my spray can" of Duplicolor DE-1601 that I found today was a lot closer color to the factorty color, but a lot of factors cause paints to change after you spray them, temperature -humidity-different temp. range reducers if your using a spray gun instead of a rattle can . I'm also making a note 1601 worked for me, I do know that over the years Ford changed their earlier years were a darker blue, later years it was a lighter shade blue, Mr. Cooper all I can tell you just buy 1 can and test spray a small area on your block. Black is definitely not for your engine. Hissing snakeman - I'll leave that up to the Cocours Judges they are good at that!

Mr. Gaines I believe you went a little more than "Off Track" you've had a complete Derailment and a very large pile-up, I've got a lot of common knowledge since I've been working on cars since 1968 ,no fancy Diploma's no Gold colored Judge cards in my back pocket, just a lot of old school knowledge.

THANKS GUYS AND GALS FOR THE INPUT I belive the the Duplicolor will work ok. Now I have another question... How should the under side of the car be finished? I have seen several photos of 1967's with some black on the frame rails and the rest of the under side being left with just what looks to be red primer... Is this the way it would have rolled off the assembly line at Shelby American??

Well the way they would have typically rolled off the assembly line at San Jose is that the bottom of the front frame rails would show red oxide primer sealer (not the flat stuff) and often a slightly different tone/tint from the floor pans. Over this we would find a little or allot of black overspray from the painting of the radiator support, engine compartment, strut mounts and wheelwell (inner fender panels and shock tower) So the amount of overspray often was determined by the angle of application of the engine compartment black and even the height of the painter

Your Welcome, Mr. Cooper, I'm the second owner of my 1967 G.T. 350. I have looked at my 66 & 1967 Shelby's , the primer nor over spray pattern on neither car are anywhere near the same, which could account partly ,that different people prepped them ,as they were being built, some took more care ,some did not, like you, I have also looked at pictures, of restorations that look beyond new condition. It really only matters to you to what level ,that you want to bring your car to.

Thanks everyone for your reponses. Now I'm moving on to clutch issues.
It is my understanding that my 1967 GT350 came with a 3 finger type clutch.
I am going back with a diaphram type clutch from CENTERFORCE DUAL FRICTION.This car will be a normal everyday driver.Does anyone have a good solution to what clutch will work better.

    Thanks
    Bob
