Well - I guess I messed something up the 1st time - so here it goes again.
I have owned my 68 GT500KR since 1979 - It is undergoing a very looooooong rebuild. Acapulco Blue - 4 speed - drag pack - has a four digit DSO code nobody seems to be able to figure out. I also have a 67 coupe - 200cu in that I am working on geting back on the road for the fuel mileage.
Right not my daily driver is an F250 Super Duty Diesel.

    Hi-

I would say Tim's right again, but his head will swell up. There are some knowledgable 68 guys in here.

I will bet you a dollar its not a drag pak car. All 1968 Shelbys have a long DSO code, so the guys you are talking to must not be as smart as we are.

    You should email
    68registrar@saac.com

Ask for Vinny, he can tell you secrets about your car.

Hi, We are a Mustang dealer in the UK, we sell new and Classic Mustangs only.
We have just purchased a 68 Shelby GT500KR in Special Orange WT5107, it is fantastic, it was restored in 02 in England, you can see it on our website. This is the first special colour KR that we have seen..does anyone know of its history, we know it went to South Africa..Chassis no 8T02R205354-03405.
    Thanks

Thanks for the replies - I will get the codes in the next few days (Car is locked away in storage) - You may be right about the drag pack - I am basing it on these facts (not the 4 digit DSO code): 3:90 Traction Lock rear end- Oil Cooler - and 428 SCJ - also one of the previous owners said it was raced before he bought it in 1973. I tend to believe it was raced as the power steering has been changed out to manual steering, and the A/C and smog pumps had been removed, and strangest of all - the ram-air was removed.

    Shelby Serial # 8T02R-210073-03573

By the way - if anybody from the Houston Texas area (where car was bought in 1973 by a previous owner) remembers an Acapulco Blue GT500KR being drag raced - late 60's and early 70's - let me know.

And last but not least - my build sheet says "Special Transmission" - Do all Shelby's have "Special Transmissions"? Any ino on this would be greatly appreciated.

and - just incase you are curious - Yes the car is listed in the Shelby American Registry.

Sorry- I corrected the email address for Vinny. He probably has some paperwork on your car.

    68registrar@saac.com

You need to round up as much of that as you can. I have more information listed here as well:

    http://www.thecoralsnake.com/PAPERWORK.HTML

I suspect you are looking at the oil cooler that was on all Shelby big blocks with air conditioning. I could see where that might confuse you.

Your car was originally equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet (not super) and a 3.00 traction-lok rear axle. All 4spd Air conditioned Shelbys have the "spec trans" notation on the bottom of their build sheets.

Thanks Coralsnake for the input - I never knew all 428's with A/C had an oil cooler - learn something new everyday.

I have gone to SAAC before with my DSO code and was told "its not important" after they could not figure it out. However I will get everything together that I have and Vinny a chance.

Just curious - why do you think 3:00 gears - if memory serves (and its been a Looooooooooooooong time - so I could be very wrong) the door tag shows the gears as 3:90's.

Oh, if you are unsure I am correct:

You build sheet will have the code "408J" on the bottom. That is factory shorthand for the 428 Cobra Jet engine for a 4speed car. (non-super)

"RUG AE" is the 4speed toploader and "4001M" is the 3.00:1 traction lok rear axle. Why ? Because I know all GT500 KRs with AC and 4speeds have the same rear axles.

Your spring colors are GLD PNK front / ORANGE rear / tires E70X15 / driveshaft AZURORGYEL / C8ZE L radiator

The Super Cobra Jet and drag pak are actually not introduced until 1969

Your DSO code looks like this:

    8D29787

    8D is the Shelby Identifier

2978 is the actual DSO. Shelby DSO codes are not like Mustang DSOs. In this case, the number is actually a "batch number". Several 1968s were built together, using the same parts and all have this number. There are probably 5-10 other 1968 Shelby GT500 KRs, with AC and 4speeds that have the same DSO.

The last "7" is actually the axle code. Which is the 3/1 traction-lok. Oh, ...and you can't look this one up on a Ford chart, because it is a Shelby only code. The Ford chart will be incorrect.

Here is the warranty tag information for Tim.

    8T02R210073

    63B D 5AA 17F 8D29787 5

The car was originally shipped to Joe Meyers Ford and that means there is ORIGINAL paperwork available for the car. Let's make that your priority.

See I told you we were smarter than those other guys.

Thanks gain Coralsnake - I will try to get to my door tag tonight and see if I can locate my build sheet before I try to "remember" anything else.

I used to think build sheets were cool, but that wore off. Once you start looking at them, they all look the same in the case of 1968 Shelbys.

I have a good sized collection and nothing really changes other than car colors and dates.

I do have one that says "METRIC SPEEDO". That's a little odd.

Well Coralsnake - looks like you where right on - the only thing you missed was the build date:

    8T02R210073 Body 63B Color D Trim 5AA Date 24U

    DSO 8D2978 Axle 7 Trans 5.

Thanks all for all the input - I will get with Vinny and see what he has.
