Looking at buying a Shelby with tag # SRM 5S 211. Can anyone tell me how to find out if it is legitimate or a replica?

    Thanks, Mike

Your are not going to know for sure until you get the car looked at by someone knowledgeble.

Also there is ALLOT of room between "legitimate/real" and a "replica/fake" You have histories where some, most or all of the body panels being replaced that can effect the cars value and id it will still be considered a "real" Shelby, by the hobby.

Considering that your likely spending $100K or more (if its less than that beware and be careful) hire someone that you can trust and get them to look at the car before you buy it. Very cheap insurance. You don't want to become one of the stories we all hear too often.

    Good luck

Well folks, what would the "SRM" part of the vin mean. I thought the number would be plain ol 5S211. Am I wrong about this?

Guessed that it was just a typo - the VIN tags had a preprinted "SFM" to where the VIN was stamped

It could be SFM. I do believe the SFM number is stamped into the apron

Well Mike, the 1997 Shelby registry says it's "a bogus" car from Ca. with a
    5R09A Ford vin. Buyer beware!
