Hi there guys I'm from Australia and new to the forum. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what they know about a 1966 GT350 being sold by schmitts on ebay. The car is Ivy Green with white stripes and is number 849 in the shelby register. Can anyone tell me why this car has a black undercarriage rather than the red oxide? Thanks
Why it is black under the car - likely just what the guy painting/rebuilding the car choose Don't think I've ever seen the car in person Of course your going (highly recommended) to have the car inspected if your interested in purchasing it. That should pick up on any irregularities if there are aby.
Shelby gt350 #849 Thanks for that. Abslutley an inspection will be required but before I go there I'd like to know if anyone knows any history on this a car? Has it been re-shelled or rebodiedat any time?
This is a good looking car. For the amount of money being asked on this car I would think that it would have been more correct, though. Just off of the top, it has a repro air cleaner, the fan spacer appears to be too long, Motorcraft rather than an Autolite battery and has an incorrect fuel pump and radiator. I would be concerned about where else on the car that corners may have been cut. An inspection is definitely in order on this one. -Fred-
Thanks for that info. On another point any idea who I could use to safely trnasport a car to CA from Florida and who can be used to do an inspection and escrow on the purchase of a car. Ross
Interesting, Schmitt & Co in St. Louis is offering 6S849, an Ivy Green Auto http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Shel...884QQitemZ400074119300QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks and 6S859, an Ivy Green (original auto) 4 speed is being offered in Florida. Originally delivered to the Hertz rental leet at the San Francisco Airport 2/9/66, it was orig painted Ivy Green/Gold side stripes, but no top stripes. Once it was released from Hertz, it was sent to Harris Ford 7/67 to be retailed. Bruce Mabbett came to Harris Ford to find a selection of about 10 GT350s in from Hertz for sale. All were dirty w/worn out tires...he chose this one because it seemed the cleanest out of the bunch. He just started working for Boeing Aircraft fresh out of college & had no money. He purchased it for $2,995 w/about 12K miles on the odometer & left a $15 deposit to hold it. He put $635 down & financed the balance thru Chattel Mortgage. While living in Seattle, it was Bruce's daily driver making many trips between Seattle & Vancouver. In ‘69, Bruce moved back to his home in Canada. In ‘71 he painted the car British Racing Green/White side stripes w/no H stating only GT350, as it was not cool to drive an ex-Hertz rental car. In ‘74, having already clocked 122K miles, Bruce had the motor rebuilt for the 1st time. In ‘77, Bruce removed the orig C-4 auto & put in a T-10 4-spd which remains today. He continued to drive the car daily but in ‘79, he stopped using it in the winters. At that time he did a fairly extensive rebuild on the whole car & painted it back to the orig Ivy Green/Gold stripes again. He also added a front end spoiler that was so in vogue at the time. We have put back the orig front valance & she looks fabulous. In ‘86 Bruce added the 10-spoke Shelby wheels, now returned to the orig Magnum 500's. In ‘87, Bruce decided to do a full frame off restoration & painted it Wimbledon White/Blue stripes. The car has photos down to its body & frame, completely redone from soup to nuts. This GT350 now had a total of 193K miles on it & was now in new condition, but was now only driven on weekends & to car shows...so only 12K miles have been driven since being restored 21 years earlier in ‘87. In ‘05, Bruce rebuilt the orig matching #s 289 Hi-Po to new condition for a 3rd time & chrome plated the shock tower braces. Now 1300 miles later, she's the best running '66 GT350 we have ever owned. Bruce occasionally autocrossed it on weekends but virtually stopped driving it all together. She has all its orig sheet metal & floors, it is still a show car w/a nice patina & runs as good as any new Shelby does. Top that off w/41 years of single ownership, orig bill of sale, finance contract, 1st registration & documented thru the years w/photographs since ‘72, this is probably the most documented Hertz car on the planet. She's ready to drive anywhere to any concours or road rally: $125,000. High end European or exotic trades welcome. Neither. I've just done a deal for a factory GT in Florida while I wait on information and negotiations on the one in St Louis. So I need to get this one out of the way in themenatime. That's why I need inspection, escrow and finally shipping to Australia. Thanks for the details on 859. I know about this one, ti's listed in carsonline. Ross
