I have been told that in late 1967 that shelby ran out of chrome rimed 5 stars and put on 5 stars with trim rings. Is this correct? David
Not at all, the Kelsey Hayes Magstar rims are just being called "Shelby" wheels, because, well, they came on 67 Shelby's. The trim ringed wheels are off the Mercury Maurauder as mentioned. Sears also sold Magstars at their tire centers back then. Funny, the Sears wheels had the black centers, unlike my original wheels with the dark natural aluminum centers.
I think I've seen this discussion elsewhere, but let's do it again! My original un-restored Magstars on my '67 GT350 have painted centers. Not black paint I grant you, but also not natural aluminum. Does anyone have the definitive answer to whether Magstars should be black, grey, or unpainted? I think black looks best, but I suspect grey is original for my car. Any takers?
They certainly weren't unfinished. By unfinished, I mean plain metal. I've seen several sets of untouched Magstars and the centers were a dark grey.
When I bought my 67 it had two magstars in the truck in bad shape. They have a dark grey center area. I don't know were they came from. The guy I bought the car from said they were in there when he bought it. Anyway these rims do not appear to ever been repainted.
