Hey guys and gals, I have a '66 Shelby H sitting downstairs on blocks and is in the process of being restored (it's just a shell at this point). Now, since much of the original stuff is gone, when it's put back together, is it a no no to paint this car white with blue stripes when it was originally black and gold? It still has the original steel hood with scoop. I'm not sure if any white Shelbys came with steel hoods. I'd appreciate your input. Thanks, Tom

I think most would say keep the original color but in the end it is your decision.

If you are not concerned about the dollar value of your car paint it the color you like . If on the other hand you want your car to hold the highest dollar value to other collectors for when the time comes to sell to another care taker then paint it the colors it historically came with IMHO. The steel hood use was not a hertz car specific or color specific . The steel hood usage and which car came with them was a matter of supply. They had some issues with paint-ability (surface contamination which caused the paint to lift) which caused a supply problem . When they had them available they used them and it didn't matter on which car. Bob

I would like to see some pictures of your restoration. Please post some if you have a chance.
    Randall

I say paint it white with blue stripes if that is the color you prefer. However, if I were looking to buy a car, I would prefer one that was the original color. So, understand that changing the color will most likely affect the value.

I'm guessing that the VIN gives it away as a Hertz, and it's likely that the color was known, too, so it'll hurt the value, sure enough. You got something against former rental cars?

like the others said, keep the original color if you value the resale potential. Otherwise, paint it purple if that's what you like.

    what's the serial number ?

If your restoring the car then it needs to be the original color - if your going to do a modified car then paint it any color you want - just don;t call it restored ;)

Will get allot more attention as a black and gold car IMHO

Keep this one original, or you will never hear the end of it. This is not a car to deviate on. When you decide to sell it, you will wish you would have spent the money to have it done correctly. Buy a regular Mustang, and customize, restomod, morphatize the heck out of it, but leave this one original. Cheers.

In the "old days" it was very popular to repaint "H" models White with Blue stripes. There was a stigma attached to the "used rental car" image of GT350H models. In the 70's and early 80's, there was typically a lower price paid for an "H" model GT350 due to this.
At some later date, this mentality evaporated, and the prices of GT350H models reached parity with non-Hertz models. These days, there is every possibilty that a stunning Black and Gold paint scheme may sell for MORE than the more common White with Blue stripes.
It's your car, so you should paint it a color that pleases you, but, if you ever think about selling it, the color change is definately going to hurt the value.

    regards,

    Jeff

Well, you didn't post the Vin number so it could be confirmed that it is indeed a 350H. And, weren't some GT 350 H's not black and gold? Weren't other colors available.....including white and blue. Or even white with gold stripes?
You may still want to keep that "H" designation and paint the car the way you want it.
But, as other experts has noted, it might hurt the value. It's up to you.

Hi, I don't have anything against former rental cars it's just that people have said that black paint will show every little ding and flaw if the body isn't perfect. Also, I've heard that a black paint job could cost upwards of 15 to 20 thousand dollars. I'm not the kind'a guy that has $100. bills hanging out of his pockets, so I thought a white paint job would be more forgiving and less expensive.

Hello, First of all, I'd like to thank all of you for taking the time to respond. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no Shelby expert and that I'm just trying to put my car back together without botching the whole project. I don't know if this car is in the Shelby Registry because I don't have the book. The number on the tag is #1984. From the sounds of your replies, I guess I'll be saving up for a black paint job. Thanks again to all, Regards, Tom

nothing in the registry re the history of this car other than color (black), original destination (San Francisco), & date of shipping from SA (5/10/66).

I don't know where you are located, but I know where you can get a flawless paint job for 10K, in any color, even black.

good luck with your ownership, we'd love to see some photos, now & later.

Hi Z, I live just north of San Francisco. My brother bought the car in SF in 1968 for $2800. , sold it to me in '72 for $1800. I don't know how old you are, but back then there was this new thing called an 8 track stereo. Well, you couldn't have an 8 track without speaker holes! Heck, what good is a sound system without big wide tires, which meant flared wheel wells. Are you starting to get the picture of what's sitting downstairs? Anyway, I've replaced both fenders with nos, both doors (used). I have one nos full quarter panel (pass) but still looking for the other. The stuff I have original to the car: intake, heads, distributor, crank caps, rearend, hood, tach, radio, seatbelts (Impact), all the interior. I have just about every to reassemble the car thanks to Ebay. Now it's just a matter of the bodywork which is why I posted the thread. I'll work on getting the pics up. Thanks for the info,Tom

I remember how thrilled I was listening to Iron Butterfly at full volume on my Lear Jet 8 Track car stereo. Apparently my taste in music was not appreciated by all, as the 8 track was stolen in my high school parking lot.

god, I'm old, and not getting prettier either.

That is true. In my opinion, nothing looks better than a perfect black paint job. Also, no color looks worse over a poorly prepped body than black. I think I would sit on the car a couple years til I could afford an excellent paint job for it.
One other thing, what will you use the car for, shows, cruises, driver, track car?

I've got a black '66 fb GT. It came to me red but I discovered, in descreet places, that the car was black originally.

I've now got a very, very nice 10k black paint job. It was worth every penny and I don't regret it.

    Keep it black.
