67 gt350 grille emblem

Not sure what is meant by square retainers? Post a picture? Bob

 

Chris, I have a strong feeling the washers were added along with the retainers and emblem. A large number of the early one piece grill cars didn't get a emblem on the front grill which may help explain. What number is the car ?Bob

 

0018 would seem to be too early for a front emblem IMHO. Bob

Have you done any work on the front fenders,and do they have emblems or holes for them? These cars are really good examples of different-and I dont think any 1 piece style grille has a mounting pad for an emblem...not that it is carved in stone,but it seems somebody thought this car needed one so they installed it without hurting anything.Talk about lucky.
Have you done a Marti report yet? it would be great to compare dates with other cars from this dso group,it would also show interior trim and other cool stuff.

Well Bob owns #001, and I own #0036, niether has a grill emblem. Also, the cover photo of Sports Car Graphic March 67 shows the red GT 500 with out it . It too is an early car.
Whats the rough car number when the grill emblem stared? 300 or so?

That is my car, number 0100, on the cover of the March 1967 issue of Sports Car Graphic. Completed at Shelby American in early/mid November of 1966.

Car number 0213 is a nightmist blue G.T. 500 that is on display at the Shelby American Collection in Boulder, Colorado. This car is supposed to be very original. It was completed at Shelby American on 01/04/67. It has a grille emblem on it. Not sure if this helps or not...........

#314 does not have a grille emblem.

Looks like the one piece or slanted grille was only used on the first handful of cars,The list of ones seen/or owners so far only goes up to around car #0073- We also know that the 2 piece grille was in use prior to Jan.1967
and it had the emblem base.Looks like the one piece goes with our flat gas caps.So far 001 002 003 0017 0018 0020 0021 0022 0024 0029 0030 0031 0036 0050 0069 0073.

Chris, Do you have the flat gas cap adapter? I had a bunch made up last year. I think I still have one left if you need one.

Here are a couple pics of it. Label is pressed flat and attached to it. The adapter is fastened to the Mustang cap with a machine screw and nut in the hole you see. Then the label is attached.

Add #0004 to the list. I owned that car for several years and it did not have a grille emblem on the one piece grille.

Thanks for the info on 0004.I dont add to the list untill I have seen it in person or have a proven vintage photo...the only way to maintain accuracy.
As an early car owner,(or former owner) you realize how these are so different in many small details.Do you have any contact with the owner?
It would be really nice to know more about it.Send a pm for more info if that works better for you.

Hello, 0004 is well documented in the registry from previous owners. Whenever the new registry goes to print it will have updated info from me. It has all of the early features including the one piece grille with no provision for mounting the emblem. It was one of the first cars shipped in Oct '66. It even had a hood prop rod. The tabs for the hood springs on the hinges were removed. It was a "showing car" as indicated on the factory paperwork. Very neat car!

Do you still have one of the flat cap bezels you had make up? If so, I'm interested. I still have my original, but it is stuck on so bad I'm afraid I'll bend it. My only alternative is to try and polish it up on the edges.
Also, I'm in the process of flattening a standard gt350 emblem, but I still don't have it as flat as I want. Is there a source out there? I know the early ones were etched (which mine is), but it's barely readable.
