What specific items should I look for? - 1968 GT500

    Hi,
    First time member on this forum. Am an avid Mustanger for years (67 GT S-conv, 68.5 CJ fstb currently) and I have an opportunity to view a 68 GT500 for possible purchase.
    I know very little about the vehicle. Caught only a glimpse of it once. Engine, fenders, hood, interior were out of car. It appeared dark green w/tan. Saw the roll bar. O reports all the parts are in his basement. I'd like just a little advice on what hard-to-find parts I should check for specifically. I plan to run the VIN through Marti to verify and assess options. The vehicle has been in this garage for 20 years, o has had plans to restore, but local economy isn't helping him. It is not a definite available car quite yet. In other words, there is no "for sale" sign on it, but the owner called and is getting closer to a decidion to let it go.
    I think I can manage to assess the shape of the vehicle from a rust perspective, and assess most of the "Mustang"
    components, but I am very unknowledgable when it comes
    to Shelby stuff. (other than I've drooled over them since I was 16)
    If the parts are in the basement in a pile, I am a little worried about what to make sure is there. In my mind I am thinking things like the console, guages, shoulder-strap retractors, shifter, steering wheel, door panels (?), tachometer cluster. Most of the other things that come to mind for me are standard Mustang items, and shouldn't be hard to replace if they are missing.
    My concern is that during my evaluation I get all excited, make a dumb decision, then later find out the car is missing 20 thousand dollars worth of hard to replace Shelby specific parts.
    The original engine is long gone. It seems like it's going to be difficult enough to try and find the correct dated engine and all it's components anyway. I am not sure about transmission or rear axle. (is it supposed to be 31 spline nodular case like a CJ?) Is there anything specific to a Shelby transmission? R-servo?
    Hope this makes sense. If I have the opportunity to view the car, I am sure I will have more questions before I consider going any further. I jus need a little more knowledge before I drive there.

    Duh, I just answered some of my questions from seeing the Coralsnake website. So, no need to answer trans, axle, questions. Also found I need to add fog lights to my list. Anything else come to mind?

    It would seem prudent that you need to find /pay someone with expertice to look at the car and items for you. Don't be pennywise and dollar foolish IMHO. Bob

    From what you describe trying to build a date-correct concours car is going to be cost prohibitive. You will probably have $15-20K in the drive train alone. You will almost certainly be upside down in the car unless you get it really cheap (under $25K) and do a lot of the work yourself.

    Note that this is the least desirable of the big block Shelbys. A really nice driver can be had for $70-80K. A super nice show car will run you $100-120K.

    I would put history and chain of ownership at the top of my list. If the tags are original, match the body and the Marti report, you are off to a good start.

    I would also add that the basic structure of the vehicle is very important as well as your own abilities and resources - also when balancing the "should I buy or pass" exercises


    I vote for a good going over from someone that knows these cars as Bob comments above. Always a bummer to find out later :whistle:

    If the original engine is gone I'd say there is good reason to suspect other parts have been changed out. I second Bob's advice, it is cheap insurance to hire someone knowledgable to inspect the car for you.
    ps: 500s had H servo transmissions not R

    Have some one look at the car. Peter, Tim, Bob or Jeff that have replyed on this thread are all good condidates for the job. :thumbup:

    I now have the Shelby number: 1576. Who can I contact to find further information from this?
    A Marti report has been ordered. What I know so far is it is dark green/black, auto.
