Hi , I have a 2008 gt 4.6 with only 1900 miles and sometimes it puts out a puff of blue smoke on start up . I told the dealer and he did'nt seem to know [or care ]. maybe valve guide seals ? The dealer thought it might go away. Has anyone heard of this . Thanx
Sometimes the Valve Seal will ride up the Valve Stem and stay there letting the oil seep down the Stem BUT........the question is, how big is the puff of Smoke and how long does it Puff? If it is just a quick puff that stops in a blink of an eye then, it could possibly be nothing but gas remaining in the cylinders after shut off and burning off at start up. They have so many new chemicals in Gas now.
Its just a quick puff then it,s gone , But its there long enough you can get out of the car and see it.
I had a problem exactly like that before and it was a valve guide seal that wasn't installed when the engine was manufactured.
I had the same problem on a 2007 GT but it only happened after I started it and pulled it out of the garage and shut it off. The next time I started it I got a quick puff of blue smoke. A mechanic friend told me this can be normal with some cars if they're not run long enough before shutting them off.
We have a 2006 GT with 32k miles and a brand new 2010 GT. Both of them exhibit the puff of blue smoke at start up. It seems to me that the smoke happens more often when the car sits a while. I assumed that the 2006, the wife's car, was unique but the brand new 2010 does exactly the same thing. I guess it's a 4.6 feature. At least Ford didn't charge extra for it.
Thanks for all the input , I talked to my ford dealer and he did pull up a bullitin from ford , stating they will smoke if the motor is not warmed up and is just started for a short time.
I didn't mind the smoke because I was convinced that this was somehow normal when I didn't let the car warm up. What bothered me was that the neighbors would think that this new Mustang had worn out its engine already.
