Another steering wheel ID thread

    I have a couple of wood steering wheels for a '66 and was hoping someone could help with their ID. In the first pic below the one on the left came off my carryover (6s081) and is in very good shape, and I picked up the one on the right (pretty beat up) many years ago from a guy who had it on his '66 notchback.
    The one off of 081 has no writing on the back, while the beat up one has
    INT PATENTED
    MADE IN ITALY
    EFFPI
    Also, as you can see the beat up version has the plastic pieces on the end of the spokes and has a black ring (insert?) on the back side while the one off 081 has neither of these features.
    Any experts that can ID them?

    Well, the two-ring commutator and two-pin canceller pegs them as 65-66. As for "correct", I could only guess.

    My thoughts are that the one on the left with the center cap is one sold thru Shelby Parts after CS and Ford had parted ways. The one on the right is the same type that has been on 6S789 since the early seventies.

    The one on the left is the 66 over the counter wood wheel. It is very desireable and very rare. It has the flash chrome hub and full wood back without the epoxy ring. The one on the right looks like the 67 wheel with the plastic ends and epoxy ring on the back, but has the cancellers of the 65-66 wheel. I have seen a couple of these and wonder if they are a late 66 over the counter wheel before the 67 Shelby's came out. True 67 Shelby wheels look like the one on the right, but without the cancellers.

    The one on the right is the type I found in our 66 when I got it in about 75. Sold it because everyone at the time told me that it was wrong for the car.

    Would like to get another and put it back on the car one day -

    These wheels can be very confusing - lots of opinions so I feel your "pain" ;)

    In the late seventies, in Stockholm, Sweden the Shelby importer
    Hansen Racing had 5 of the left wheel type hanging on the wall
    in his shop. Remember the center emblem very well. Carl Hansen,
    the owner wrote the certificate so I was able to register my 67 Shelby
    I bought in L.A. and shipped to Sweden. Carl is gone but one of
    his sons still runs the family busniess.

    Thanks everyone for the info. Sounds like the left wheel was an over the counter version, but the heredity of the right one is still up in the air. When I bought the right one many years ago, I thought it was for a '67 and later realized the cancelling mechanism was for a 65/66. Maybe it was late '66 version as 1175 is guessing.

    I was trolling on ebay yesterday and found a wood wheel that is being sold as a '67 that has the '66 style canceling posts (Link below). In reviewing the questions (I think the 4th one down) there is one that comments it may be a wheel for an early '67 Shelby that has a '66 steering column. Did early 67s come with '66 columns? If they did this, it may explain the wheel on the right I have.

    Yeah, this is why I stopped listening to "everyone" a long time ago.

    A friend bought one of those 12 years ago for $1200. I thought he was nutz.

    Branda now sell a repro of the 66 wood wheel for three grand, so I guess he wasn't so nutz after all.
