I know the Kelsey Hayes are for a '67, but I prefer the look over the period correct '68 10 spoke rims. Would it be considered blasphemous to put rims for a 67 on a 68? Thanks
I personally liked the 10 spokes. Thought that was one great wheel. I had the mag hubcaps on my '68 GT 350.
Don't shoot the messanger but the ten spoke was not period correct for a 68 Shelby. The ten spoke is a 67 wheel. S7MS engineering number cast into the back which indicates 67 Shelby . There was a problem with the inside of the rim rubbing on the larger single piston 68 caliper . They work fine on the back but need a 1/4 spacer on the front. The problem wasn't resolved soon enough to be included in 68 production and so they were not used. SAAC has factory documented 4 68's with tenspokes and they were all shipped over seas. The rest of 68 production received hubcaps from the factory. They problem was resolved about a year later by Shelby wheel company which used a combination of a short spacer AND machining of the inner rim. The ten spoke became a popular replacement wheel. But not from the factory. Bob
Thanks for the detailed reply. So, am I to understand that back in '68, the only thing I could order for a GT350 were hubcaps (not that they look bad)? I'm probably in the minority, I have to say, I'm not crazy about the look of the 10 spokes. Can anyone forward pics of a '68 with Kelsey Hayes? I think it would look sharp. Thanks
Here is a pic of SuperCJcat's 67 Shelby with Magstars. Also, here is a pic of rsimkins 67 Shelby with Magstars.
That is correct. Hardly. Hubcaps are gorgeous and rock. They are a lot of work to restore because of the original design and their tendency to "find" cubs.
It is your car and you should do what you like. Like the others have said there is no right wheel for the 68. If you like the chrome look you may consider magnum 500 wheels and use the Shelby center cap it makes for a very nice look. The great thing about wheels and tires is you can change it back in no time flat with little effort. Dominic
drspencer, It is your car, and you should enjoy it in the manner you like. There is no rule that says you cannot use the wheel/tire combination you prefer. If you should choose the MagStars, may I suggest that you obtain a good torque wrench and regularly re-torque the lugnuts. They have a history of loosening up with normal driving. Been there, done that
Good question. A 15 inch Magstar wheel is a little strange from other wheels in that the rim necks down to the center which is the same diameter as the 14 in Magstar wheel. Most 15 wheels have a larger diameter center then a 14 inch of the same design. Because of this unique Magstar design I know that it has less clearance then a regular 15 inch like a Magnum 500 would but wether or not it will clear the 68 caliper I don't know. I have never felt the need to try but maybe others have. Bob
On my '67 GT350 ( I was the original owner ) with MagStars; on a full turn to the right, the right wheel would contact the upper A-frame. A full turn to the left, was ok. I don't know if this was indicative of all MagStar equipped, '67 Shelbys. The slight variance in the MagStar construction as noted by Bob G. and the larger calipers of the '68 would tend to make one think there is a good chance of contact when a MagStar is used on a '68 Shelby. If you sould go with MagStars on your '68, please let us know how things worked out. Also, don't forget to re-torque the lug nuts frequently. They will loosen. Ask me how I knowB)
