    OK, I searched and I give up…

Recently I saw a post somewhere that a vendor was modifying standard 67-68 instrument clusters to have the appearance of factory tach clusters, even showed the back view of the modified cluster.

Thought I bookmarked it, now I can't find it. Sound familiar to anyone?

For a factory tach to work you would need the tach dash wiring harness. A lot of 67-68 Cougars came with a factory tach and they can be made to work. Check this link.

Gentlemen, New to the forum but come with some knowledge of tachs and clusters especially 67-68. This link you post is a product that is still being developed. I have talked with the creator of the product both by email and in person, and I have seen the working model in person as well. His name is Frank, and he is a real nice guy with a nice product that fills a need.

The tach does not require "Tach" wiring, as you see in the video. As of this date, the final production of the item has not been completed. It was supposed to have been ready to go months ago, but Frank is a stickler for details (so am I), and wants it to be perfect before releasing it. Frank is a very busy man, and if he had the time to focus on this one thing, it would be done by now... but he doesn't, so here we are.

The only other issues are price and install. While anyone that wants to add an in dash tach to their non tach car can dream of a $150 drop in, that isn't going to happen unless you want one of those itty bitty ones that go in the clock hole. This deal is +/- $600, and you will need to send your cluster in to have it converted. Still this represents a good deal IMHO. When they come to market, I can give the item a big thumbs up for a quality piece that looks correct. The only downside being that you don't get a trip speedo for that price, so those wanting that item would have to consider the added expense.

I personally restore original tach clusters for resell (a hobby - not a full time biz), so I know a bit about them. For customers buying a cluster from me for their Non Tach car, I rewire a standard wiring harness to work in conjunction with a tach cluster. I provide the customer with a wiring diagram for the tach to be installed independantly. Note: this must be done carefully or you can fry the tach (or ruin your underdash harness)!, so it is not recommended for novices. Also, what you use for a distributor can come into play here as well (ie an aftermarket msd with additional box and the like). As some of you know, you can NOT mix and match the wiring from an original tach car with a standard (non tach) car, as they are completely different.

Hope this info helps. If anyone wishes to discuss this subject with me further, feel free to drop me an email.

    Thanks for having me,
    Lee
