here is what they looked like. Of course this one is likely faded. Click on thumbnail for larger photo. And select "full size" above photo once on the photobucket site.

The more expert than me will have to chime in on the best type of paint.

I just breezed thru the '66 sections of the '97 Registry (most current), and saw no paint code reference for the painted Magnum wheels.

contacted the great one, Howard Pardee. he locatecd a paint code in the registry!!! He found it in the 65gt350 wheel section. said they share the same code. he verified the info w/ old work order requests.
he will contact his dupont paint supplier to get more info. so stay tuned.
anyones thoughts on the above are welcome.

hmm.Seems a little contradictory. 65 GT350 with steel wheels had the wheels painted argent silver (just like it is listed in the registry) and not the primer gray like the 66 standard wheels were painted. It would hardly be the same color formula? There must be more to this story that will explain the comment.

    Per Howard Pardee...
wheel color code for gray painted magnums....1966
"Dupont H780-95176 Silver, per Shelby American DSO requests to Fords San Jose assembly plant".
    Howard has the original document.
    All comments and thoughts welcomed.

I know Howard most certainly knows the difference between the Silver Argent 65 wheels and the Gray 66 wheels. I am concerned that you are misquoting Howard not on purpose but by accident. There appears to be some miscommunication. You used the words "Gray" and the words "Silver" to describe the same thing. You can understand my reasonable concern when two different colors are used to describe the same thing. Hopefully "silver" is just a small part of the formula that mixes up to be "gray". Maybe a "silver" vendor classification description. I guess you will find out when you mix up paint and it will be ether "Silver" like the 65 GT350 standard wheels or the "Gray" like the 66 GT350 standard wheels. I hope you have the correct formula for the "gray" 66 GT350 standard wheel paint for everyone sake. Bob

    bob,
i am quoting howard the best i can. i also talked to him about the silver 65 vs gray 66 wheels. he believes the dso request is the same for both. more investigating needs to be done.
if you give me your email address i will foward howards email to you.

I think I figured out why Howard would be giving you a silver paint code for a 66 wheel. In early 66 production they were still selling cars with 15 steel wheels painted the argent silver mounted with the blue dot tires. Sept 1966 of motorcade mag has some nice picture of a 66 GT350 H and a standard 66 GT350 with the silver wheels. The 14 inch standard gray wheel came a little later in production. Unfortunatly this does not help with the gray wheel paint code on the 14 inch gray wheel but does satisfy my puzzlement over Howard's info to you of a silver paint code for a 66 wheel. Bob

    Ed,

I believe I spoke to you today. Anyway, that Dupont paint code that Howard is quoting should be a different color from the 14 inch painted '66 Magnums. The 15 inch steel wheels (which is what that Dupont code is for) were not the same color as the Magnums.

But, if someone does find the paint for that particular Dupont code on the 15 inch steel wheels, let me know. I have had no luck with that-no Dupont rep. that I have spoken to knows what it is.

My best mate is the Strategic Relations Manager for Dupont and he helps me like you wouldn't believe, to find strange and unusual formulas for the Mustang's I'm restoring, so I've asked him and will get back to you all.

    Cheers,
    Sean
