Like what was posted by others the VIN is the ALL important thing. The Ford or Shelby detail does not add or subtract value IMHO and for many it can be just a ego thing IMHO. That ego thing may actually cost you money . I see a day when the name Shelby ,Cobra, Pantera, etc. will be part of a program to track and extract more personal property tax out of us for these cars that have dramatically appreciated in the past few years. In my state of MO it is already in place to do exactly that. The antique license plate system that so many are fond of is another subtle why of tracking valuable taxable state income. Be careful. I know of many owners in various states that prefer the name Ford in INSTEAD of Shelby to protect the anonymity of their 6 digit valued Cobra , GT500/350 or the like. The VIN is the most important thing that tells the most important story IMHO. Bob

You are so correct Bob, it would be ironic if we have to sell our cars
to pay the taxes based on the value of the same cars. Sounds like
Sweden used to be before the socialists were voted out of power
and property tax and wealth taxes were removed.

When I applied for plates I had my SFM vin number put on them. My Illinois vin card simply listed 66 Ford mustang 2dr.Years later when I opted for AV plates the DOT worker noticed the identical vin and plate numbers and changed the preprint to Shelby mustang. Appearantly some of the state workers are on the know.

My 66 GT350 is registered by the Hawaii DMV and my State Farm insurance as a Shelby vehicle under the Shelby American VIN. I do not want to give out the Ford VIN and have never given it out as it is not visible to an inspector. We are one of 18 states that require annual vehicle safety checks and the VIN has to match the paperwork. Luckily our registration fees and property taxes do not assess the car value.

As SAI was the designated MSO and has a local registered DMV code as there were 2 Shelby dealers in this state.

Don't know that giving out the Ford VIN is part of this discussion I thought we were talking about titles that list the manufacturer as Ford with the listed VIN being a distinct Shelby number.

If the Ford VIN is on your title instead of a Shelby VIN ('65 - '67), then you've got major problems.

I just mentioned using Ford instead of Shelby VIN in response to the earlier comment that some owners may use the Ford VIN in order to avoid higher tax or registration assessments. Anyway, as far as I can determine on 65-67 Shelbys, SAI is the designated vehicle MSO, not Ford and therefore the VIN should be the one issued by SAI.

I haven't seen any MSO's that had both VIN's listed on them (that really would've confused those poor old tag agents).

No earlier comment that said that some owners may use the Ford VIN in order to avoid higher tax or registration assessments? reread my comment. "I know of many owners in various states that prefer the name Ford in INSTEAD of Shelby to protect the anonymity of their 6 digit valued Cobra , GT500/350 or the like. " Just talking about useing the word "FORD" instead of "Shelby" to possibly avoid paying higher personal property taxes. Bob

For those of us who have had our Shelbys a long long time, this all comes from whatever the person who did the title work at the dealer wrote into the space for the title. And, usually "she" couldn't be told anything.
To this person, it is a "Ford" dealer, and everything they sold was a "Ford". Even a Thunderbird was a Ford 2dr, or 4dr.

If I ever move and want to change the title to the new address, I'll try to correct this.

I'm wondering though. What are these late model Shelbys titled as?

I looked at my paperwork and my 09 is titled as a 2009 ford mustang and that is the reason that the gas guzzler tax was struck off by my dealer.

i dont recall the exact wording on my registration back in the 70's ,but it didnt state shelby or GT350 on my 66,68,or 69.
I had to go to a local CHP with my Reg and the car. An officer would inspect them both and complete a small form veri9fying it was a shelby,.
I would take that back to DMV and the conversion would be final.
Registration would say Shelby GT350 or what ever it was I had on the form.

I recall back then that to keep my insurance rates low it was better to not change the name to shelby as a general rule.
