I just picked up a nice Cobra lettered dual carb intake manifold and was wondering what typical size cfm and brand of carb that was used back in the day when duals we're run...Think'n they must have been small cfm?
The COBRA dual four barrel intake originally came with Carter AFB's. The numbers for a matched pair are 3258S and 3259S. The air cleaners were supplied by Stellings. The fuel log was also unique to this intake/carb setup. If you look under the classified listings under Parts on page three you will find an add for a complete seup with pictures. Joe
Thanks for the info although I think finding the Carters may be a challenge these days. I'll probably just opt for the holley 390 cfm's. I need to check my bolt pattern on the cobra intake because I read somewhere that it may be a Carter bolt patern and not sure if holley's will bolt up...does anyone know?
Just a quick follow up...Holley's will not fit due to the carter bolt pattern. Edlebrock has a 500cfm that will fit vintage manifolds
I have the Edelbrock dual quad set up on my 68 Cougar. I like it. Not very good for economy, but the car sure is fun to drive!
Depends on the manifold. The low-rise had the carbs too close together to fit Holleys. Carters are easy to find- Edelbrock now makes them.
The Edelbrock intake will NOT take the Holley pattern. If you want to run a Holley carb, you need Ford/Blue Thunder parts. I had the low profile Edelbrock DQ intake, and upgraded to the air gap dual quad. Hood interference isn't an issue for me, as I'm running a fiberglass hood with a cut out for the GT-E scoop... http://s819.photobucket.com/albums/zz114/woodsnake4462838/?action=view¤t=gracecar011.jpg
There was also a dealer option Holley 2x4 set up available from Shelby parts and accessories. Dual quad high riser induction, claimed 40 - 50 hp increase over std 4 bbl, used 4160 holleys - pretty sure they are 450 cfm. I've got that setup on my 66 GT 350 and it is awesome. The original owner installed it along with a Hurst shifter at the dealer when he took delivery.
I know a fellow with a 66 GT350 clone, built with all used original Shelby and NOS parts who found the intake you describe (and is illustrated above) NOS, and it runs very well. I have never seen the low-rise Edelbrock (AFB ) version on a car, but it should run pretty well, too.
2+2-that's the exact manlifold I recently purchased, Guess I'll be ordering the Edlebrocks 1803 & 1804. They are matched and supposedly set up for dual quad with one being an electric choke and the other is manual. Thanks for all the threads
When Carter sold them you could get one manual or auto and one with no choke. This is the Cobra low-rise:
What is the value of a set of carter 3258s and 3259s caburetors? I have a set that I am actually looking for more info on so I can maybe sell and came across this thread. From what I found so far, these were avilable on a couple of early 60s 2x4 Chryslers (though I haven't seen a chrysler setup) and a shelby cobra option. Not sure if they were offered on anything else aftermarket or over the counter. From what I found, mine look like the ones shelby offered.
So I'm running the edelbrocks 1803 & 1804 and the next problem I'm running into is that the Oval Cobra air cleaner base is 8 1/2 from carb center stud to carb center stud???? Is there another base and/or top plate out there with the closer gap for the edlebrocks that I'm running so I can use the cobra lettered air filter?
As shown above, there was no oval for the Carter setup, just two round air cleaners. I have seen a solid plate for the oval air cleaner, to permit such custom work. Or you could just use a pair of these, cost about $30:
bummer. so in order to run the oval Cobra air cleaner with dual carbs, you cannot run the cool Cobra letered dual intake...kinda crazy. So what do most people do when they run dual carbs with the oval Cobra air cleaner...blue thunder intake or perhaps an Edlebrock after market intake? so much for everything having matching cobra logo's
The earlier Cobra 2-4V intake used Carter carbs, and predates the oval air cleaner. The taller Cobra 2-4V was set up for Holleys, and does use an oval air cleaner. You can always get the oval with no holes and put them where you want them. http://store.cobranda.com/blboforovair.html
Thanks 2+2...i just ordered one. Any ideas on how to make the top plate work with the existing (2) hole for the wingnuts? maybe I could fab up some brackets...the edlebrocks are closer than 8 1/2" Thanks again for all the feedback
