Last time they were at Road America they were too cheap to rent the entire facilty and it was a disaster. (Funny that the local Northwoods region seems to be able to afford that!) They had the car show and the parts swap buried so far in the back acreage in an area Id never been and Ive been going there since 1963. That was the year they had the banquet at the track and the Thunderstorm blew the tent away. Theres a problem because they want a large central hotel facility so they can sell the $35 chicken dinners and get a bunch of rooms comped. Its a business and it doesnt make any sense to not make money. A denver convention makes total sense, theyve never been anywhere near there, the Museum is right there and theres a dragstrip and road race track that can be rented for next to nothing. Hotels are everywhere. Other than the fact that you have to drive 500 while looking at nothing but corn fields it would make a great convention in my humble opinion >From: "Colin Comer" <colin@colinsclassicauto.com> >Reply-To: "Colin Comer" <colin@colinsclassicauto.com> >To: "NVSAAC" <info@nvsaac.com>,<ShelbyMustang@CarMemories.com> >Subject: Re: SAAC 32 - Where do you want it to be held? >Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 15:02:44 -0500 > >How about Road America? > >----- Original Message ----- From: "NVSAAC" <info@nvsaac.com> >To: <ShelbyMustang@CarMemories.com> >Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2005 2:58 PM >Subject: SAAC 32 - Where do you want it to be held? > > >>Mike, >>I'm glad that my mind wasn't slipping... Jim and all-I recommended VIR to Kopec a couple of years ago and those were his exact objections. I wonder what he's done to overcome them? There is no one hotel in Danville, VA big enuf to handle it. Closest is the Sheraton-Koury Center in Greensboro, about 1 hr. away. The BMW CCA is holding their OKTOBERFEST there this Sept. w/3 days of driving schools and autocross at VIR, Concours at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro but all other social events at the Sheraton. Stan: Interesting that Kopec finds a 1 hour drive too far for hotel to track. It seems to me that Lime Rock, in Rick's backyard, is about an hour's drive as well. All-Agreed about the drive-time. No big deal. Frankly, I got the impression from Kopec that there was some NIH factor involved...He probably wanted it to be his idea, not mine. I offered to help in the planning but never got a call. He and the SAAC "In-Crowd" do their own thing. There are a few deterrents to VIR (no covered garages-only a huge paddock, lack of civilization close by, etc.) but the track itself makes up for it. If you should get bored running VIR, then, by all means, your next best track has to be Nurburgring! I also recommended VIR when it first opened. My reply was the same. Lack of convention sized hotel. But if they can hold convention in Dearborn and track event at Mid-Ohio and make it work, Washington DC is that close. So I am sure there will be some distance between the hotel and the track. Greensboro sounds like it will probably be the hotel center. On Wed, 6 Jul 2005, STAN SIMM wrote: > Jim and all-I recommended VIR to Kopec a couple of years ago and those were > his exact objections.
