Transmission fluid

Discussion in 'Shelby Mustang List' started by Ronald Robertson, Jul 8, 2005.

  1. Need some expert help from the listers. In a 1969 Shelby GT-500, and I think in all Ford products of that vintage, the recommended transmission fluid is type
"F" which is very difficult to find - even local Ford dealers do not carry it. They all carry the modern transmission fluids, I think it is called Mercron or Dextron which is NOT recommended for old Ford products. What is the difference between the two and why can't the older Fords use the new stuff? We have just had transmission work done and the transmission is completely empty and nneds re-filling. Want to make sure we use the correct stuff. Your expert comments and help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ron
