Hi all, I am looking for a nice original car that someone would happily send me a picture of, of the back of the COBRA intake, on a 68 GT350? I can't find a decent picture of where and how the PCV and brake vacuum line connect and what to, etc. Any help is appreciated. My email is: bosskraft@hotmail.com Cheers Sean
Sean, We need more info. What is the build date and is it an auto or stick? The build date determines whether it was a factory install or dealer. Tim
Hi Tim, Thanks for the clarification. Produced on 18 Jan, 1968 and its a factory stick. Pic attached of the current 'situation'!
OK that would be a dealer install. Because there was no standard meaning dealers could have some liberty there may be variations but typically it will look like this, or sometimes they screwed the brass blaock to the factory J code round vacuum extension like, according to Ford the PCV was supposed to go into a spacer under the carb like picture # 1
Thanks very much, you have been very helpful! It does appear original and is the style fitting that you'd find in a 65 to 67 GT350 intake (the brass style). It also has the 65 style thermostat housing (with C5 part number) with no availability for a vacuum tree, so considering the two items together, perhaps it was just as it is? The booster was disconnected and removed and a drum master cylinder in place (for reasons I can't figure!), so that's likely why they had blocked off the other port in the back of the intake as the vacuum was no longer required for the booster. Would you consider all that a possibility? Thanks again for your help.
The PCV ported into the intake yes because I've seen that before but I don't think the thermostat tree. The tree was considered part of the emissions system and 68 being first year for federal compliancy I think they would have not removed it. Plus why would they add a part that they could have reused? Having said that and combined with the fact vacuum source for brake booster is gone it also makes me wonder if the PCV was also done by previous owner and not dealer. Does it still have the dual diaphram distributor and thermactor? If it were my car and I had to make a choice, I think I would do it like picture # 1
Na, its got some trashy accel distributor in it at the moment, but I have purchased a correct C8ZF dist for it. I read that it would have had a single vac advance, even though a 4 speed. I think it was on NVSAAC.com? You're saying that it should have a dual, like a Boss 302 style? The only reason that the brake vacuum line is removed is because some twit had actually removed the entire booster from the car and installed a drum master cylinder on it. No need for a vac port, so they've blocked it off completely...! Crazy!
A dual vacuum adavance is correct for a 4 speed GT350 in 1968, because all 4 speeds originally had smog. The thermostat housing should also have the ported valve as the vacuum hose plumbing needs to match. www.thecoralsnake.com
I know people like to repeat numbers...so here is one for us all to remember: 84% of all 1968 Shelbys came with smog. Thats 3,735 of the 4,450 cars built. The only cars that got away without smog were the 715 GT350s with automatic transmissions.
Thanks guys, I do have the smog here for it, but wasn't sure if it actually came with it or not. It was sent to Alaska from new and was then swiftly sent to Texas (the only saving grace for the body!). You've all been a great help.
