'67 GT-500's were "Q" code cars not "S" codes. The "S" code Mustangs were designated on the assembly line to receive 390 cu. in. engines. "Q" code Mustangs were designated to get 428 cu. in. engines, which to assembly line workers meant that this car was(is) going to be a Gt-500 Shelby. But with that said their could have been a few exceptions along the way especially with Ford.....IMHO.

Wrong! Q and R code is not the 428 Police Interceptor, it is for the 428 CobraJet, not introduced till 1968 models! All 67 and 68 GT500s were S codes except for the 68 GT500KR which had the R code (428 COBRAJET) motor. For 69 and 70 they used the R codes for the regular GT500, I also believe some Q codes were used for those two years 69 and 70. R and Q are 428 Cobrajet engines, for the 69, 70 regular mustang R was for Ram air(shaker), and Q non ram air.

Sorry uwti. Respectfully, in '67 "Q" was the 428 PI engine and cars bound for Shelby American were the only Mustang body to get it. Most '67 G.T.500s got the "Q" in the serial number (mine did, 7R02Q21XXXX). A few early one may have had "S" for the engine code in the VIN. As for the the "R" mentioned by 557, that indicates the assembly plant, San Jose, not the engine.

An excellent question. Does RAI have insurance if the car turns out to be something else?

The Q in the serial number is the best way to be sure the
car is a 67 GT500 as no 67 Mustang had that engine code.
    My car has 7R02Q17XXXX, 67402F7A01317.

I stand partly corrected, 67s were Q code 428PI (internal designation) built by Shelby-American. but early 68s were S code and later they used Q code for the GT500 and R code for the GT500KR.

One more correction - Shelby American did not build the engines they were built by Ford at the Ford engine plant and installed on the San Jose assemblyline. Also there are a few legitimate documented K code stamped GT500's as well.

Respectfully Mr. UWTI, you should do your homework before you start throwing exclamation points around on your reply to my thread. After all, we are all just trying to exchange accurate information here.

I would recommend that you find someone that is versed with 67 Shelby's to look at the car for you. There is a unfortunate history of people buying a problem car. It was not uncommon for these cars to be rode hard and but away wet. Not saying that is what you have there but for instance we have seen original parts put on a donor body's so that in itself (checking numbers ) is no safeguard . It takes more then a cursory examination to determine if there is a problem. It isn't wise to take short cuts when a high dollar car is involved. Just my 2 cents. The best of luck with the purchase.
