Hi forum members, I have joined this forum because i am in the process of building up a 260 cu in engine that i want to try and duplicate the engine in the early cobra's. I have not had much luck in finding info and specs on these engines and would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance for any input.
The best I can tell here was not "a" 260 configuration used but several as Ford and Shelby went through a learning curve. Some cars got engines from the Ford development group labelled in paint pen HP260-(a serial number). I have seen old pictures of HP260-1 and HP260-8. One car, still original owner I believe, came with a 2V induction system. Scattered through the early engines were experimental SK- and XE- castings and forgings. Of the HP260 versions I only personally know two early Cobra owners with anything of an original HP260 4V engine left and neither has enough parts to build a running engine. Another very early car owner I am familar with took quite a bit of time finding a rebuildable 1962 Fairlane 260 to build up for his car because it doesn't seem that salavage dealers kept much 221/260 stuff.....almost no demand. Someday I hope to visit the two owners (long way off and very far away from me) I know and get photos of all the SK- and XE- parts they have left from original HP260s in Cobras. Dan
Dan, thanks for your reply and link to the mustang forum. I am not looking for original parts. I have a '64 Comet with the 260 in it and would like to just get specs on the 260,s used in the cobra's. I read on various post that there was a 264 HP/260 with 4V and a 335 HP/260 with 4 webers. I plan to rebuild my existing heads to the cobra specs, valve size, screw in studs etc. and also cam specs. If I don't have any luck with cams specs I am thinking of using a 271/289 solid lifter cam. TT
