When I bought 6s081 in the late '80s it came with 4 10 spoke wheels that I have never been able to identify. From what I have read, they are very similar to some 15" 10 spokes that were fabbed in the late '60s, but are 14". In looking a little closer over the weekend, it looks like I have 3 of 1 type and 1 that has been machined to match the others. Here are a couple pics of the 1 odd ball that looks like it was machined to match the others. Based on the center hub and solid webs on the back , it looks like this is a re-pop that has been machined to match the other 3 wheels. The question I have is in regards to the other 3. I can find no evidence of any machining on them so am wondering if anyone has any idea on their heredity. Here are some pics of one of the 3. For anyone that would like to see more detailed pics of them both, I have more on photobucket at http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/289ace/1966 GT350 10 Spoke Wheels/ At photobucket all pics stating "machined" are what I believe is the re-pop wheel, and "unmachined" reflect the ones I am trying to ID. Thanks, Jay
giving this a bump in case someone new on the forum might be able to shed some light on these wheels. Jay
Jay, it looks like you have three original 10-spokes, and one repop (most likely from the mid 80s). The originals had a significant raised pad for the lug nut, and that pad had an area that connected it to the center hub. The repops didn't have that connective area, and the backs of the spokes, like yours were generally solid.
TJinSA, Thanks for the reply. The thing that has me confused on these is the lack of webs extending to the outer portion of rim (front side) on the ones that look like originals. There appear to be no signs of machining and so it looks like they were originally that way. Have you ever seen another set of "originals" whose webs did not extend to the rim edge? I am considering removing the tires from the wheels and checking for any ID marks on the inside of the rims. If I do this, what should I find if they are originals? Thanks, Jay
Thanks Ed, I have checked many reference books and cannot find anything that looks like these and that is why I have posted here. Do you know of a reference book that shows these wheels? I will be switching my car over to my Torque Thrusts later this week and will removing the 10 spokes from the car as I prefer the 5r spoke wheels to the 10 spokes. At that point I will remove the tires and see what stampings (if any) are on the inside of the rim. Does anyone know what stampings were there on the original 10 spokes? Jay
the overall design of your wheel is 1968ish. maybe they are cut/milled 68 wheels. orig 10 spokes had the spokes going all the way out to the outer rim edge. ed
Ed, Thanks for the responses. I'll remove the tires this week and see if there are any identifying marks on the rim including any dates. Jay
Removed the tires and unfortunately on the 3 wheels that I really would like to ID there is only one stamp on one wheel. It is an ink stamp that is a small circle (~.5") with SCC and the number 2 stamped below that inside it. In going back to all of the 10 spoke pictures I have seen posted on the web, they look like original 10 spokes that have had their webs machined, but if that was the case someone spent much time removing the machine marks. Unless someone has some different info (you still reading Ed?), I will assume that is the history on these. Still not sure why someone would go to all of that effort, but I'm sure there was a good reason at the time. As for the fourth wheel, it has many stamps on the back of the wheel and also has the raised inner safety bead, so I believe the statements of it being a later wheel are correct and it was machined to match the other 3. Thanks to all that brought their knowledge to this discussion. Jay
