For Sale by (unhurt but pissed) Owner:

1969 Trans Am race car , #31. Flies excellent when hit by mid-year Corvette
doing 100 mph from behind. Lands well on other Corvettes. Needs some repair.
    Best offer.

Seriously, it was a terrible wreck, the worst I have ever seen. As a
participant and Group 6 driver in this race, I can only say that it is very
sad that we lost so many great cars yesterday in one wreck. However, the
most important thing is that nobody was seriously hurt - some broken bones,
a punctured lung, etc., but we sure expected much worse at the time. The
pictures do not convey how violently and incredibly fast all this happened.

I will fix my car, as I suspect everybody else will. It is much better than
not being here or burying a friend and/or other driver. Maybe this incident
will wake some people up so we can get back in touch with the fact that
these are VINTAGE events and should be treated as such. We should not have
guys with 700 hp small blocks in cars that can not handle them. This is all
about having fun and being safe. Cutting every scrap of metal out of you car
that you can to save weight and then putting in the best "cheater" motor you
can is done to win - it does not better the sport or make it safe.

I thought long and hard last night about going back to Group 5 or simply
avoiding events that are a "run what you brung" type of deal. Just my $.02 -
and understand I am still a little upset by the whole deal, especially when
I look at my car! Just thought you guys might like the opinion of somebody
who was there and a part of the carnage. Very unfortunate.

On the bright side, my 65 GT-350 #249 won the Road & Track concours for
"Best Street Car" , and my 289 Cobra CSX2327 won the Road & Track Trophy -
"Car we would most like to drive". I am suitably thrilled about both of
these awards - look for the Cobra to be in R&T soon.

    Regards to all-
    Colin Comer

  2. Collin:

That accident is one of the reasons why I am practicing my vintage driving skills - at leaast minimize my potential. It is very hard to do this vintage stuff on my 65 GT 350 early car. I dont have
the luxury of power steering where I can drive with one hand on the wheel and the other on the shifter. (I learned this when you go over uneven roads that control the cars steering and if you are not
careful will break your fingers when road pavements are bad) Also, the radial tires is another issue for me when it comes to sliding under control. Some SAAC guys told me that Goodyear polyglass is
good for sliding under control so I will be trying that soon. Another learning factor about the 65 cars are the seats. If you are not wearing the seat belts, your butt will be sliding all over the
interior on hard "G" force turns.

Also, the clunking detroit locker noise is not too bad on road races but when driven on the street, it is annoying on 90 degree turns. I have to say...it is not like my 67-500 cars but with the side
pipes on them now (which was easy to install seeing the nasty Shelby factory clamps still intact to the frame), they sound just as good as a big block...I think.

    Crazy

I wouldn't race mine even though Mine is an ex racer. One screw up from
another driver and poof goes another 60k to fix her.

I have found that a large number of the vintage race cars are clones. Not
just our cars, but other marques as well. Some will get the vintage
eligible race car and store it in the garage and then make a clone of it
from an ordinary street car or kit car or whatever and enjoy it without as
    much concern.

I am not saying this about ALL by any means, nor am I making any sort of
judgement on the pratice (good or negative). But issues like yours are
what concern people in Vintage racing these days. I can't say I blame them
especially with some one off cars and the prevelance of damage in the
vintag race world these days. Our cars are fairly fixable, but the same is
not true of all vintage race cars.

  5. I love "CRAZY"....Its what makes the world exciting and full of rewards and I guess dissappointments too.

My motto has always been to "Live for Something or Die for Nothing!" I guess that is why I like Shelbys so much - they mean something to me.

    ok...Im off the Octane booster...

OH!!! ONe bad habit I have started to pick up on the 65 car is driving too fast on the corners. My neighbors have complained to me about the speed but I offered their kids free rides in the car as
compensation. hahaha I even let couple of them drive it. They love it. One 16 yrs old even bought a 66 project coupe as his first car so this means I will be helping him and his dad do some
    restoration work.
