In 2009 I saw a thread on that subject either here or on the ford gt500 forum. Seems to me that there will be a physical size problem in doing that.

    Hi,
So far we have heard of a lot of testing, and developement being done, but still no official news from Ford directly at least.I would wait and see before I spent any time or money on this sort of project. This engine has incredible torque just as it is...an automatic will need to be able to handle quite a bit more than usual...Drag race setups are not "street friendly"and you may not enjoy the launch from a high stall convertor when you are on the street trying to behave.
    Hope this helps you out!

Been done and expensive. New ECU setup with the proper tuning required also.

    Cheers

    Nice article here:
    http://www.westcentralauto.com/gt500_trans.htm

Not too expensive, claims to have $3000 in it, and perhaps because of his decision to go with manual lockup and OD switches, not much in the way of messing with the ECU.

Not for everybody, but reasons to go with an auto include increased consistency at the drags, and a breeze to drive in stop-n-go traffic.

    Considering this myself.
